An interesting Rain Man-type of thread: "Neighborhoods" of states

This is a pretty cool set of research done on an NPR blog. The guy used basic information to track dollar bills to see where dollar bills get spent. The basic premise is that large metro areas are beacons for incoming money. You could say they function as foci for various regions of the country, where a huge portion of the dollar bills seem to stay located. This map is what he found:



I highly recommend checking out the rest of the article. It's interesting to see where certain lines are drawn and how people from different states tend to associate across borders where the business is. At its heart, this makes perfect sense. For example, Minneapolis/St. Paul is located very close to the Wisconsin border. Are people who live just over the state border in Wisconsin more likely to spend their money in Minneapolis or Milwaukee? Well, the answer is obvious, but state borders have a way of sectioning those people off as being totally not associated at all with that metro area.

There is a lot of other cool maps and shit on the blog post that explain the decisions they made. Some of the other data they draw from includes who people tend to talk to on cell phones. And obviously, they're better at explaining their own research than I am.

A few observations:

1. Texas and Oklahoma really dislike each other.
2. I'm really surprised that Connecticut isn't more connected with New York City. Don't a lot of people commute to NYC from Connecticut?
3. I'm surprised that NYC and DC don't have a line between them. You'd think that each is large enough to be self-contained.

So does the fact that the huge KC metro area includes both KS and MO contribute to there being no line? I'd say so. I grew up in Olathe and the KS/MO border was never a factor for me or people I knew. It was all just...the area we lived in. Probably helped that I had a side of the family that lived by the stadium.

We hate each other along this corridor like siblings but there is enough transient commutes and moves between the metro areas here to keep the money moving. Lot of people like me that grew up in one part of the Northeast but move to another and still go "back home" often enough.
