I'm aware of the legality and the contract these players sign; my issue is with the basis of the situation. He could potentially be outlawed from the NFL... For smoking a plant.

I hate to beat a dead horse but they need to just go ahead and legalize the shit. The world would be a lot better off, I think. But that's the gubment for ya. "Doing drugs could ruin your life, so if we catch you doing drugs we'll ruin your life!"

And if that would happen, it would be by choice. Lets weigh the options here, make millions of dollars? Or get high? That's one tough decision

I might as well nip this shit in the bud before it gets out of control..

I UNDERSTAND THAT PLAYERS AGREE TO NOT SMOKE WEED UNDER THE NFL's SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY. ALSO, I AGREE THAT IT SHOULD BE AN EASY CHOICE BETWEEN MAKING MILLIONS WHILE PLAYING THE GAME YOU LOVE AND GETTING HIGH.

It absolutely should be legal. I'd legalize it all tomorrow if I could. People should be able to grow their own, or buy it anywhere that sells booze.

But this is not the case. It shouldn't be illegal, but it is illegal. And more to the point, if you're a professional athlete, the company that employs and pays you a fortune tells you not to do it, and tells you that they'll test you for it, and that you're ****ed if they catch you. If, after all that, you STILL do it, you're a dumbass.

A little more on Von Miller...

***********

To reach the suspension phase means Miller was already in Stage Two of the league’s drug policy, which means he was already subject to unannounced testing up to 10 times a calendar month, according to the policy. And according to the policy, once in Stage Three, as Miller is right now, he stays in Stage Three “for the remainder of his NFL career.’’

Miller will be subject to unannounced testing, up to 10 times per calendar month, for the remainder of his career. The testing schedule will be set at “the sole discretion of the medical advisor.’’ The policy also states that players in Stage Three, like Miller, are tested for the “Drug Panel and alcohol.’’

A violation in Stage Three and the player is “banished from the NFL for a minimum period of one calendar year.’’ The policy adds that even if a player is eventually reinstated after a year out, “he will remain in Stage Three for the remainder of his NFL career, subject to continued testing and indefinite banishement.’’

Players in the testing program must also “provide the Medical Advisor and the Medical Director with an address and telephone numbers where they can be reached at all times.’’ (Per ESPN)

Wait, people are actually buying the pot excuse? He obviously got caught using steroids, but the NFL's policies pretty much allow players to claim in the media that they used a different drug instead.

The marijuana claims didn't come from him, they came from the league.

Precisely! Hence 'the leak' Elway used against the NFL to keep the suspension at 6 games otherwise it would have been a year.

im not sure it really matters really. Either way now a failed test of any kind in relation to substances means that hes done for a year.

So for it to be pot, or roids, or amphetimines at this point is really a useless argument. Im sure though they would probably hope it would be Roids. Pot is a hell of a habit to kick.
