What About Running a 4-4???

49ers did that alot yesterday and shut down L.J. for the most part. LJ only had a couple of good runs. He only avg around 3.3ypc.

Anyways I think we should do something like that in running situations. This way we could get Bell on the inside again and Fox as the ROLB. I'm a huge fan of the 3-4, but we don't have the defensive linemen to do so. So I'm asking what do people here think about running a 4-4? Is it more of a college scheme? I don't see it much in the NFL.

It also exposed thier corners and safeties and allowed Damon Huard his "dan marino day".

I'd rather just see Fox at OLB with Bell coming in in blitz packages.

I don't know if Knight could keep up in a 4-4.

Maybe if we were defending the run poorly, but we aren't.

No way.

Given an opportunity to game plan for a 4-4, an average QB, TE and WRs in the NFL will have career days against it. Too many mismatches. LBs consistently covering on number 3 and 4 WRs, or a good TE, gives a decent offense way too many shots at big yardage. Eventually the Defense will pay....just like the Niners did yesterday.

Huard had a good day, don't get me wrong. But we couldn't expect him to consistently do what he did yesterday against a normal 3-4 defense, or a good nickle or dime package. Otherwise he'd have a starting job in this league.....Cleveland, Detroit, Buffalo, etc.

It wouldn't be a bad gimmick scheme against a team that couldn't throw the ball worth a damn but could run it (given our corner play), but i still don't see the point of us running it. The 4-3 works just fine.

Occasional use of oddball personnel packages can be effective. Continued use of oddball personnel packages will get you exposed. Basically overusing strange personnel packages allows offenses to adjust and exploit the weaknesses of such a package.

Belichick occasionally used to send in defensive personnel groups with 6 LBers and 1 DL. They worked because the OL didn't have a clue who to block and the Patsies have/had a bunch of tweener LBers who are almost as big as DE's. I don't know if they have done this lately or not.

The 49ers only used the 4-4 because they believed that our passing offense was too moribund to beat them. The weakness of the defensive personnel package was quickly exposed.

Its not a bad scheme to throw in in obvious short yardage running situations, but its a horrible Defensive base scheme, unless you're a Jr high football team.

4-4 yielded 41 points.

Let's let Herm and Gun plot the D.

IMHO a 4-4 would be a perfect D for KC to go with. You don't want to hurry it though, take some time to develop it in practice then bust it out on oh, I don't know, maybe Thanksgiving night?

Dungver does the same and both O's have career days.

The D hasn't given up a TD in 10 quarters and people want to change things up?
