Football Should flex scheduling start Week 1?

The Colts were on Sunday night football against the Steelers this past week. Granted, that was a close game. However, this week the Colts play the Bucs on Monday Night Football. I understand why these games were booked. No one knew Peyton Manning would be out, but is anyone excited about Colts/Bucs with no Peyton Manning?

Call it the Manning rule or whatever, but it's in the best interest of the NFL, the networks, and the fans to have the best and most intriguing games on in prime time.

Why can't they have flex scheduling all the time? The NCAA does it. Many game times aren't determined until 2 weeks prior and networks, at times, can invoke a 6-day option.

You would think they could predict viewers for a game a few weeks out and adjust. Good point.

Maybe it's some sort of agreement with the other networks, so they don't get mad that too many good games on Sunday gets flexed out.
It does suck, though. I heard the only Colts game that can get flexed this year is against the Pats, and they probably won't want to lose the Pats. So, we're going to see way too much Curtis Painter.

I'm not excited to watch the Colts no matter who is playing QB.

I think its that and they probably dont want to disrupt fans schedules too much over the course of a season.

I mean, it does sort of suck if you bought tickets months ago expecting to go to a noon or 3'o clock game and it got changed a few weeks out.

oh and the Irony is, that Steelers/Colts game turned out to be pretty good.

Especially if you have kids. Who would want to take their kids to a Sunday night game, especially on the East Coast where it might not end until 11:30.

You can't tell who is going to be good or bad that early in the season. At the end of week 1 would you have thought Buffalo v. New England was going to be a shootout decided in the last 3 seconds?

week 1 is rather early. No matter how bad a promising team looks in week 1, the audience is not going to abandon the game for week 2.

I'd think flex scheduling should start somewhere around week 5, but only on a limited basis at that point when a team is clearly horrid and/or decimated by injury.

Do you really think the NFL cares about 70,000 fans when you're talking about 12 million + viewers?

They must a little bit, or else every prime time game would be a combo of Dallas/NYG/NYJ/NE.

Eh, they already schedule a bunch of primetime games based on market and not how attractive the game looks to the average fan, so I don't think it'll ever happen. They would just end up replacing the Colts/Bucs with the Cowboys/Lions.
