Master's degrees

Who has one (or many)?

Are you currently or recently worked in the field that pertained to your field of study?

Was it worth the time and money?

Does having a post-grad degree prevent you from working on other fields?

It totally depends on what you are going to do with it. What doors will having it open for you? The lack of focus by college graduates is mind boggling. They run up a ton of debt and graduate shotgunning for a job. Just asking the random question of whether you should pursue a masters degree comes up way short.

MBA in my field, and transferable to any field. Was easy after a number of years in the real world and worth it in my opinion. A lot of shit suddenly made sense.

Would not be in my current position without it.

Was it worth the time and money? Definitely. I learned more in my MBA than I did in undergrad. First time I've ever felt challenged in school.

Plus, I started out making a little over 1.5x what I made before getting my degree. 3.5 years later I'm making more than double. I would not be making this much if I hadn't' gone back.

Does having a post-grad degree prevent you from working on other fields? It probably precludes me from certain positions. Companies are still looking for experience over a degree. It doesn't hurt when selling yourself for a position though.
See above.

Assuming you are speaking mostly towards an MBA, it is nice to have and it opens doors, but it is important to also have the related work experience to make it as one of the finalist for a position. When applying for a position that attracts and/or requires an MBA, you will always be going up against people who not only have the degree, they also have the work experience.

Majoring in something useful is important, but getting a few years of experience and a graduate business degree is one way a person could remedy the mistake if they did not.

You ready to sell tickets, work in the mailroom, or be a bitch? Because that is where you will start in the sports business. I said **** that, I'll use the other part of my degree and actually get paid.

In terms of whether it will benefit you financially in the immediate sense, which a lot of people seem to want to know about, no. But I am sure it will help me in the long run.
It definitely seemed like it for me, too... my graduate classes were so much more intensive than undergrad and it didn't come with 2+ years of bullshit core classes. I thought it was well worth the time and money, especially after seeing a problem in an interview that I had seen several times in one of the economics classes.

See, and I'm okay with bitch work.

But at the end of the day, having a master's won't get me anywhere that enough bitch work would wouldn't already.

And I still wouldn't be well connected enough.

I have a Master's in English Literature. Considering I got paid to get it, it was definitely "worth it." It's definitely helped me out in my career and given me more respect from colleagues and superiors as well as opened some doors for me.

Damn dude. You just don't have any confidence in any area do you? This makes it sound like you've already convinced yourself...

You need a Chiefsplanet Man Makeover.

I got deluded into the idea that it's okay to try to the highly improbable because it's "what makes you happy that matters."

But I'm not like other deluded idiots in my age bracket. I understand that there are obligations to fulfill. Thankfully, I'm single and childless so my only obligation is to myself. And my chief obligation is to put a roof over my head and food on the table. I've been lucky enough to live on the savings left over from college, but someday soon both my luck and the savings will run out.

I have to have a real job. Being a peon whilst earning an advanced degree that isn't as useful as an MBA (and even then, people with master's aren't getting jobs either) just to try and eke out the practically impossible chance of being a GM or VP in the NFL just because "it makes me happy" is asininity bordering on insanity.

Life isn't about being happy, it's about surviving.

If you could get an mba from a Northwestern type school you probably wouldn't have to worry about money troubles ever again. I think the median starting salary for someone who just graduated a top mba program is around 125k.
