So Cassel is clearly the wrong guy, but what should Pioli have done?
So with my finely tuned senses and amazing powers of perception, I have detected some small modicum of dislike for Mr. Cassel, and for Mr. Pioli as well. I realize that the hatred of Pioli is for more reasons than going with Cassel, but it seems to me that not only is the Cassel deal a big part of why people hate him, but a part of why the Chiefs are losing so much, which also leads to hating the GM who built the team.

Putting aside the keep Orton option, which I'd agree the Chiefs should have done, what does ChiefsPlanet say Pioli should have done with the QB position? Clearly Sanchez is NOT an answer either, so Pioli made the right move in not spending a high 1st round pick on him. I'm also not aware of any Drew Brees to Miami level screw ups in terms of QB options that were ignored.

So what realistic move should Pioli have made, but didn't, at the QB position that pisses everybody off so much?

Heck, someone on here (GoChiefs) had a link on a post I saw explaining why Pioli should be fired, and the discussion of all the options he had other than Cassel were really pretty pathetic.

At the end of the day, I am not upset that we didn't sign Orton.

What I am upset about is the near certainty that the reason that Orton signed with the Cowboys because he was told that Matt Cassel was the unquestioned starter and that he would only be signed to compete with Stanzi for the backup position.

That is the failing.

Cassel is the unquestioned starter.

To address the OP, I won't tel you what Pioli should have done.

I've discussed that before.

But I will tell you what Pioli should not have done.

He should not have blown a draft pick trading for that useless piece of garbage.

One of the primary reasons I didn't want Pioli in KC to begin with, other than the misconception that Patriots have a good draft record with Bellichick and Pioli, is that I knew that he would bring Cassel to KC, and I wanted no part of him.

How the hell does a man have 3 years around that piece of shit QB not know that that QB is a piece of shit?

What is worse is that he absolutely refused to bring in any competition, either through the draft or free agency, or trade.

The Lions traded a 6th or 7th round pick for Shaun Hill in 2010.
Meanwhile, we think that Tyler Palko is a backup QB.

Seriously, Brody Croyle, Tyler Palko and Brady Quinn?

You can't put aside the "Keep Orton" option - it was the best option. They HAD the guy who they could win with as a stop-gap for the QBOTF, that they should have drafted. You only get so many chances to do the right things sometimes, or you end up where the Chiefs are now...

Wasn't that the case with Dallas as well?

Didn't Pioli make a comment about Orton signing a really nice deal in Dallas? I got the impression from Pioli that it was a money issue.

This. He should have at least taken a shot on one of the QBs in the past draft. It would have taken some of the heat off of him, and would have given us all hope that there was some kind of young option. Maybe they still believe that Stanzi is their young option. I think it's about time to find out. I would bet ANYTHING that he looks better than Casshole.

I don't think his contract was all that substantial.

I think it came down to which team he'd rather stand on the sidelines for.

I don't think he ever wanted to be in KC, unless he had the clear chance to start.

I didn't want Cassel to begin with. I thought they should hold onto Thigpen (especially if we had kept Gailey) and draft Sanchez. Sit Sanchez for the year while putting some pieces on the team for 2010. We could have used that 2nd round pick to pick up Max Unger, Patrick Chung, Conner Barwin or Rey Malaluga, all of which would have helped the team more than Tyson Jackson does.

There is no way to tell if Sanchez would have turned out better with sitting for a year but we wouldn't be any worse off than we are now.
