2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Glass half full right there. (pun intended) He jacked up our payroll over $80MM.

I'm going to more Royals games and spending more money in 2013 JUST because of that. You can scold the dog over and over again for pooping on the carpet, but when it inexplicably does something right, you gotta do positive reinforcement, pet it, and go "good boy". I'm sure I'll be enraged in August but hey, maybe we'll get lucky.

Then fire DM. Personally I don't think Glass spends enough money. If he were serious about wanting to win we would have bought some pitching and kept our prospects.

I'd love to fire that worthless piece of shit. First, get the flux capacitor working, though, and undo the stupidity he unleashed on defenseless fans yesterday evening.

Shields is a stud. In a vacuum, I'd love to have him on my team. But we'd be better off with Marcum and Myers.

I really think the Royals believe Myers to be a strong candidate to bust. It explains why they didn't bring him up at all last year. They were 100% going to trade him and didn't want to expose his flaws.

I originally thought this but I don't think that's the case really. I think it's as simple as DM sick of his garbage rotation every year, and the fact that guys he counted on (Paulino, Duffy, Hochevar, Montgomery) refused to/couldn't pan out. He's exasperated, and he thinks his current team could be .500 or better with a trade. I think he likes Wil Myers quite a bit but knows it's one of his few trade pieces and he used that chip.

I think Rany is being a dick. If he thinks giving up Myers and Odorizzi is too much, fine. But to say that Mike Montgomery and Patrick Leonard are solid prospects is dishonest. Mike Montgomery has pitched his way to non-prospect status after two wretched seasons in the minors, and Patrick Leonard is still in the rookie leagues.

Rany is certainly interesting and persuasive, but he's not some baseball God. He's still the guy who tried really, really hard to convince us that Kila Ka'aihue was the second coming of Ryan Howard.

Rany is a grumpy dude. Can be interesting at times, but other times it's just like .

It certainly looks that way. I don't like losing his potential but it was just potential. He never did a single thing to contribute to 1 win for the major league team. The same certainly can't be said for the guys we got, who just happened to make our biggest weakness much, much stronger.

DeBerg makes the point all the time. Even when we as fans have been happy and excited about a player the wins and loses are all that counts in the end and that hasn't improved. There's no reason not to believe wins won't increase after the pitching we've picked up unless you're just being obtuse. I for one am glad to see them actually make an effort to win now instead of always hoping prospects will pan out... which never happens overnight anyway in baseball. (unless you're Mike Trout)

I honestly think fame is getting to him. He used to be a great read every time, and don't get me wrong he normally still is. I bet when we get rolling, in June he'll still be enjoyable and interesting, but right now I think he's in a feedback loop where he's getting egged on and on and then starts to lose perspective. Yes he's on the right side of the debate on this one, but he does his argument damage by going over the top.

That's what I wish for too... mostly for the idea of the Royals winning more. Believe it or not I wasn't actually trying to piss you off.
