Mock (7/18)

Assumptions:

1. The Chiefs finish 5-11 and end up picking #8. Andy Reid, John Dorsey, Pederson and Sutton are all retained.

2. The Chiefs extend QB Alex Smith for too much money, because they are the Chiefs. They fail to extend OLB Justin Houston and franchise tag him, because they are the Chiefs. They do, however, extend S Eric Berry at some point over the next 12 months.

3. The Chiefs cut QB Chase Daniel, TE Anthony Fasano, OLB Tamba Hali and CB Sean Smith.

4. The Chiefs re-sign G Rishaw Johnson after he has a solid 2014 season starting at RG to a 3 year, $8m deal. They also re-sign Ron Parker for 2 years, $3m.

5. The Chiefs let walk RB Joe McKnight, WR Junior Hemingway, OT J'Marcus Webb, OT/G Jeff Linkenbach, C Rodney Hudson, DE Allen Bailey, OLB Dezmon Moses and CB Chris Owens.

6. The Chiefs re-sign FB Anthony Sherman, LS Thomas Gafford to minimal deals.

7. The Chiefs sign OLB Ricky Sapp (Texans) to a 2 year, $4m deal.

8. They receive four compensatory picks: a 3rd, a 4th, a 5th, and a 6th.

On with the show:

1. CB Josh Shaw, USC

Reminds me a bit of Richard Sherman. He's a long, strong, physical defender without elite straightline speed. Incredibly smart player, and finally somebody we can trust with a #2 WR on an island.

2. OT Spencer Drango, Baylor

An extremely promising tackle with LT upside, Drango will finally bring some stability to a tackle position desperately lacking it. Drango will likely push both Fisher and Stephenson to start. Stephenson will be gone after this season, and all we'll have at that point is Fisher.

3. WR Jaelen Strong, Arizona State

Dwayne Bowe 2.0. This team has three elite speedsters in Avery, Jenkins, and Thomas... now it needs more end zone production. Strong is 6'4", lighter than Bowe, super athletic, looking every bit the part. He'll need to work on his route running.

3. CB/S Byron Jones, Connecticut

Another long corner, this time with safety experience. The Chiefs continue to struggle at corner after losing Brandon Flowers. They're about to lose Sean Smith, and at this point their "elder statesmen" of Cooper and Gaines haven't played consistently enough.

Jones is pretty good in coverage and excellent in run support. He's a "team defender" rather than the lockdown Shaw, and will be valuable in most nickel and dime packages for a year or two before challenging to start.

4. TE E.J. Bipps, Iowa State

As John Dorsey continues to be stuck in the stone age when it comes to tight ends, Bipps makes perfect sense. He's a reliable receiver, though nobody's idea of a game breaker. But his main selling point in Kansas City will be his ample experience as an excellent in-line blocker for the Cyclones.

4. CB/S Adrian Amos, Penn State

Amos was kind of thrown out there with little help at corner at Penn State, and flourished despite having inadequate support. He's yet another long corner with 4.5 speed, but plays with great awareness in space -- an ideal safety prospect for nickel and dime packages.

5. RB Kenyon Drake, Alabama

Mandatory problem-child selection, as I seem to always have one. Drake is a tough runner with good speed, and a police record to go along with it. The Chiefs could scoop him up as he slides.

5. WR Tyler Lockett, Kansas State

Probably my favorite player in the Big 12 last year. Lockett is an excellent talent with deceptive deep speed and brilliant route-running.

6. NT Chris Smith, Old Dominion

A huge body to clog the middle, Smith could be the reliable backup NT this team has absolutely never had since it switched to the 3-4.

6. OLB Ishaq Williams, Notre Dame

Williams has been very disappointing in college football, but still possesses a good array of tools to work with, an experience in the 3-4.

7. C Matt Hegarty, Notre Dame

The Chiefs will need more talent along the interior of the OL once Hudson departs and Kush starts.

I think he'll go high, too.

As of now I'm just rolling with where various sites have him projected. Right now he's a midrounder.

Watch it. The same thing that happened to Flowers is going to happen to Hali. They're contracts outweigh their output.
