Mock draft (9/11/12)

I expect the Chiefs will sign Albert during the season and tag Bowe again.

Like I did with Brandon Carr, I will continue to assume we will let Dorsey walk. To replace him, the Chiefs try out Poe at DE, and start Powe at the nose.

I also anticipate us letting Peyton Hillis walk. We'll replace him by taking another one-year flyer on a backup everybody thinks is broken down in Rashard Mendenhall.

Quinn is also allowed to walk.

Belcher and Siler will both walk. To replace him, we sign a bigger, more versatile, more talented ILB in Daryl Smith of the Jaguars. For depth, Larry Foote is scooped up for a one-year deal as he has nowhere he can go.

Toribio, resigned for a couple years. Lucas Patterson is kept as a reserve. Travis Daniels kept on as a safety.

The Chiefs finish 9-7, and miss the playoffs. They will be picking at #17.

They get a 3rd round compensatory pick for Brandon Carr.

1. QB Tyler Wilson, Arkansas

Whether Pioli is kept on or not, it's pretty clear the Chiefs need to trade the house for a new franchise QB. So the Chiefs trade their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, as well as a 1st in 2014 and a 2nd in 2015 to move up from 17 to 5. They get back an additional late rounder in 2014.

Wilson is facing stiff odds this season. He is facing a program in disarray, all his best weapons in the NFL, and a different offensive system and some health issues. Nonetheless, he slides to #5 as most teams in the Top 5 (Rams, Vikings, Seahawks) believe they have their guy.

So the Chiefs go all in for a chance at a true franchise talent.

3. OLB Shayne Skov, Stanford

The Chiefs trade up again, this time trading their 4th and a 3rd next year to trade into the top half of the third round to bolster their pass rush.

The Chiefs simply need more from their passrush, and Skov is an attempt to bolster that some. Between Wilson and Skov, the 2014 draft will be skinny, but at least they'll have talent at two of the most important positions in the NFL: QB, and passrusher.

3. QB E.J. Manuel, Florida State

These are different times for the Chiefies.

5. SS Ray Ray Armstrong, formerly of Miami

Armstrong is a problem child, but he has the physical skillset for a true in-the-box safety that Crennel loves. Under the tutelage of Eric Berry, he should be fine, and he's outstanding value when he falls.

6. OG Omoregie Uzzi, Georgia

A light OL who can play all three positions at the interior. He needs a year in the system to get stronger, but he's extremely athletic.

7. ILB Patrick Larimore, UCLA

Don't know, I just look at the roster I've drafted and I know I need some talent at the interior. Larimore is a solid 250 lbs, though, so that gives us a solid backup thumper behind Smith.
