Hawkwind was the #26 progressive rock band of all time.

Yeah, that was the story I'd heard about them. Big prog rock band. I've never checked them out.

Not really progressive rock. Stoner rock really.

Lemmy said he quit because he preferred speed to LSD.

It's too bad that Jake's a complete mess now. For a really brief period, he was a great guitarist and personality.
I liked a lot of his Ozzy tracks though I agree it wasn't the style he truly wanted to play but he laid down some killer tracks with Ozzy.

Sharon is the Puppet Master and I still can't believe that raging **** hired Robert Trujillo and Mike Bordin to re-cut all of "Diary" and "Blizzard" so that she wouldn't have to pay Daisley and Kerslake any further album royalties (The royalty thing I described before only applied after Ozzy & Sharon hooked up and Randy died).

I prefer the aggression of Dio's voice to Ozzy's and loved both of those albums (and even the few tracks since under "Heaven & Hell") more than Sabbath. Although Paranoid is a classic album.

My favorite Dio solo record, by a long shot, is "Killing The Dragon". Dio's voice sounds amazing and Doug Aldrich is the best guitarist and songwriting partner Dio had worked with. His playing and tone are phenomenal.

Blizzard isn't as important to me as Diary but it's a good record (although IMO, Randy Rhoads has one of the worst guitar tones ever recorded on Blizzard). Diary to me a is classic.
I agree Randy's tone one Blizzard was rather meh but it was signature and still is. Though the tone on Diary was much better.

Before EVH, a Les Paul was a Les Paul and a Strat was a Strat. No one had thought to combine the two (Strat body, Gibson Humbucking pickup) to create a new sound, which lead to a new style of playing.

While there is some controversy surrounding what was actual amp and signal chain recorded for VH1, there is no doubt that his guitar sound was unlike anything anyone had ever heard, outside of the Sunset Strip during that era, before.

His new breed of guitars not only launched Charvel/Jackson but companies like Warmoth, ESP, Ibanez (who had only previously made Gibson knockoff), so on and so forth. His work with Mike Soldano and Reinhold Bogner (and later, James Brown) helped to create the sound of Modern Rock and Metal.

The most ironic thing about EVH is that this wasn't planned - he basically stumbled ass-backwards into everything because he was just chasing the tone in his head, which in 2012 is quite different than it was in 1977, although he'll tell you it's exactly what he's been striving for all along.
I thought it was Bradshaw that got EVH his "brown sound" by taking a fully amplified signal then soaking it down into custom effects, etc?

Nope, not even close. Bradshaw didn't get involved until the 80's.

Jose Arrendondo did some work for Eddie on his amp before VHII, but that was restoration and not a mod.

Also, keep in mind that 99% of what EVH has said in print about his rig is a lie.

Confirm or deny this old time rumor - Sharon handed out rotten eggs at an Ozzfest featuring Iron Maiden and told the crowd to pelt them, becasue Maiden was having trouble with the way she was handling the event and/or paying them? And due to that, Maiden made the decision to not actively tour in the US ever since?
I went to the Ozzy Ultimate Sin tour when Metallica was opening up for them. They had just released Master of Puppets. I was told by someone who should know that Ozzy\Sharon made them turn their shit down a lot because they didn't want them outdoing Ozzy.

I didn't like it then and when I revisited both albums recently, I liked those albums even less.

Outside of No More Tears (and even then, only a few songs standout), I've lost all interest in Ozzy. Boring songs, repetitive guitar riffs and recently, sub-par production.

Blech.

Vinnie Vincent? The guy recorded his guitar solos at half speed (15ips), then they were played back at regular speed (30ips). Total poser phony.

Nuno? Sure. He's a great player. Nothing distinct about his tone, solos or writing but he can play.

Vivian Campbell? Nah. He's a Gary Moore clone, and not even a good clone at that. He just happened to get the Dio gig after Jake turned it down.

Steve Clark? I'm dumbfounded. Steve Clark?

IMO, Vai's the only "Guitar God" on your list and he's still active, albeit, not in the spotlight.
I think Mick Mars is underrated not for his soloing ability but just his general playing and writing. I never cared for Vai though I admit I am in the minority on him but he never did anything that just blew me away like others have.

I agree after Tears I gave up on Ozzy and that is who I grew up idolizing because of the guitar talent he brought in. I think Killer of Giants, Shot in the Dark, and Bark at the Moon are some great tracks with some great guitar work.
