How the NFL is Cheating Rookies out of Millions of Dollars

http://ble.ac/2tU9cdS

Not able to post on my phone but this a really interesting article.

What do you think? Should NFL players strike? If you were an NFL rookie, what would your mindset be?

Most, if not all, NFL teams are guaranteeing first round contracts for injury.

2nd rounders are guaranteed 2 years for injury.

The players - for all of their talents - didn't actually create the sport. They are beneficiaries of decades of men who slogged away for a pittance compared to any rookie deal. They didn't build the business and simply want to reap the benefits. It's the Lavar Ball mentality.

If I sell a script to a studio, they will make a ton more money on a hit than I will. Guess why? Because they put up the capital a hundred years ago. They built the industry. They have the infrastructure and distribution and marketing capabilities. If the players think they can handle branding and litigation and negotiate with cities for stadiums and liaise with fanbases about parking and community integration and sponsors, they're ****ing crazy.

The bosses are the bosses and are paid as such. I'm a bleeding heart liberal socialist, but welcome to reality.
Have you sold a script before?

Rookies can get an extension after your three of their contract correct? If I was a star player I'd holdout at that point

Except you wouldn't have any leverage because you'd be under contract for at least 2 seasons (3 & 4 and possibly, 5).

Not hard one on the math who is going to get paid more.
NFL made over $8 billion more dollars in revenue last year. It's been over $20 billion the last 3 years.

It's not four years for all rounds. Just the first and later rounds are not much. 5th rounders are 2-4 max and their signing bonus is the only portion guaranteed. He got a 4 year deal but Hills signing is only 17k per year and his base is under a mil each year.

When they bargained the new cab, the vets wanted smaller rookie deals so that more money would go to vets and 2nd/3rd contract guys.

What it did was create such a market loophole that it's so much cheaper to have guys playing on rookie deals, teams figured it out and it actually worked against vets.

If they had any sense, every rookie would take one game check and buy a career-ending injury insurance policy.

They would have to hold out. Owners have no incentive to negotiate a new deal with them other than not wanting them not to play and the how bad it looks.

The salary cap is still the salary cap, I don't see how it's working against the veterans. Teams are still paying the same total amount of money. Each team has some super players getting tons of money with cheap rookies making up for it. Veterans get more of the salary cap because of the rookie slotting.

Players get half of that. Then divide it by 32. Then divide that by 53.

NBA makes 1/4 of that. 2.6 billion. Players get half. 1.3 bilion divide by 30. Then divide by 12.

Less players = more bucks for them. Not hard to see.

Well not really, looks Suh's deal, look at Carr's deal etc...Teams have to spend what 99% of their salary cap? If less is going to rookies more is going to Vets.

This. It's just greed. They make millions regardless. They won the life lottery by being born in the USA. Fortunate to be born with the traits and talent to play the game. Fortunate to get paid millions. What more could you ask for in a world where in some places people don't have access to water? If they get hurt they weren't as fortunate as others. That's life.

Everyone wants more money. Most people have to earn it. Some inherit it but abunch of rich athletes who complain about wanting more money is distasteful. Complain about money to the soldier who makes nothing but risk everything.

But it's okay for the owners to keep 52% of the "shared revenue"?

This reads like a dipshit that has zero understanding of economics.
