Patriots' Hernandez Questioned By Police in Homicide Probe

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/nfl...#ixzz2WbiGOtye

NORTH ATTLEBORO, Mass. -- New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was questioned by police investigating a possible homicide in this town 40 miles south of Boston. A source with knowledge of the investigation said Massachusetts State police spoke to Hernandez on Monday and were interested in possibly searching his home.

Hernandez is not believed to be a murder suspect, according to a source, but a vehicle rented in his name has emerged as a key piece of evidence in the investigation. The Sun Chronicle of Attleboro, Mass., reported on Tuesday that police identified a rented 2013 Chevrolet Suburban with Rhode Island license plates in connection with the possible homicide. According to the paper, the vehicle is registered to Enterprise and investigators were hoping to analyze it for fingerprints. A source said Hernandez's name is tied to that rental vehicle.

A jogger found the body of a 27-year-old Boston man on Monday in an North Attleboro clearing, less than a mile from Hernandez's home.

A North Attleboro police car idled in front of Hernandez's home on Tuesday, parked across the street from two television news vans. Yasmina Serdarevic, a spokesperson for the Bristol County District Attorney's Office, declined comment on Tuesday afternoon when contacted by SI.com.

A source close to Hernandez confirmed that the player had spoken with authorities in connection with case, but would not elaborate. Athletes First, Hernandez's agency, declined comment when contacted by SI.com. Hernandez has consulted with a lawyer, who did not return a call from SI.com.

A fourth-round pick in the 2010 draft, Hernandez was named to the Pro Bowl in his second season. Last season he caught 51 passes and scored five touchdowns for the Patriots.

After a frustrating day of practice, Aaron Hernandez screamed "Jesus, can we finally go to the bar?" And Tebow was sold.

Hernandez role in '07 shooting probed
Updated: July 3, 2013, 12:22 PM ET
By Kelly Naqi | ESPN

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Authorities in the Massachusetts murder case against former New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez have reached out to the police in Gainesville, Fla., in hopes of determining if Hernandez had any role in a 2007 shooting that left two men wounded, a source with knowledge of the murder investigation told ABC News. One of the men was shot in the back of the head, according to a police report of the shooting obtained by ESPN's "Outside the Lines."

At the time of the 2007 shooting, Hernandez was a freshman on the University of Florida football team. Hernandez is being held without bail in Massachusetts after being charged June 26 with first-degree murder of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd and five weapons-related counts. Prosecutors called Lloyd's killing an execution-style shooting orchestrated by Hernandez because Lloyd talked to the wrong people at a nightclub. Authorities said Lloyd was shot three times at an industrial park as he twisted away in a futile attempt to avoid gunshots and then was shot two more times on each side of the chest.

The 2007 Gainesville shooting happened on Sept. 30, when Hernandez was a 17-year-old freshman with the Gators. The two men and a friend of theirs had left a nightclub and were in their car stopped at a light blocks away when their vehicle was fired upon, according to the statements two of the men gave to police. Corey Smith, a 28-year-old at the time who was sitting in the front passenger seat, was shot in back of the head. Justin Glass, the 19-year-old driver, was shot in the arm. Randall Cason, sitting in the back seat behind Smith, was unharmed.

While several witnesses told police the shooter was a black male, Cason said there were two suspects.

Cason, then 20, told police that shooter was a "Hawaiian" or "Hispanic" male who had a large muscular build, stood about 6-foot-3 or 6-foot-4, weighed about 230 or 240 pounds and had a lot of tattoos. Cason said there was also a black male with the shooter, and Cason identified the black male as Reggie Nelson, a former Florida Gator who was a rookie with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Nelson, in an interview with the Gainesville police, said he had been at the nightclub earlier but denied he was even on the same street as the shooting.

"As they were waiting for the light to change, the Hawaiian football player and Reggie Nelson walked up to their car on the right side," according to the police report, which cited what Cason told detectives. "Then without saying a work [sic], the Hawaiian pointed a small handgun in the front right window and fired five quick shots. Cason saw Smith slump over with blood coming out of the back of the head, at which time the Hawaiian and Nelson took off running towards McDonald's."

The police report says that Nelson and Hernandez had been in The Venue nightclub along with two other Gators players, Mike and Maurkice Pouncey, twin brothers who now both play in the NFL. After the shooting, investigators interviewed Cason at Shands Hospital. Cason is described as distraught and emotional, and an officer indicated Cason said several times "it should have been him that had been shot and not Cory [sic]." Cason told investigators that a week earlier his brother had gotten into an altercation with several Florida football players.

Nelson told investigators that he was at The Venue with several friends that night. He said he later saw Aaron Hernandez and the Pouncey twins, and Hernandez told him that one of the twins had his necklace snatched by Cason. After the club closed, Nelson said, one of the twins confirmed the story to him. Nelson said he went to speak to Cason, advised that he didn't want any trouble and the two parted on good terms. He said he was not on West University Avenue, the street where the shooting took place, when Smith and Glass were shot.

Two days after the shooting, Gainesville police Lt. Keith Kameg was quoted in the Orlando Sentinel as saying neither Hernandez nor Nelson were suspects. Police have also said that they briefly interviewed Hernandez about the shooting. But, according to the police report, Hernandez declined to speak to Gainesville police nine days after the shooting. Hernandez's name is redacted from the report because he was 17 and considered a minor at the time. However, there is one reference to Hernandez in which his name is not redacted. In that section under "Aaron Hernandez," the report says detectives attempted to speak to Hernandez on Oct. 9 but that "he invoked his right to counsel."

That same day Cason, who had originally said Nelson and the Hawaiian or Hispanic male were the suspects, "rescinded his identification of Aaron Hernandez and Reggie Nelson," according to the report. While Hernandez's name was redacted in the document, it was the first time the report indicated that Cason had positively identified Hernandez as the shooter at some point.

"Outside the Lines" left messages for Cason, Glass and now retired Gainesville detective Patty Nixon, but they were not returned.

Smith said he suffers from seizures as a result of the shooting. "God is good," he said. "I'm here for a reason. I just want to know what happened and who did it so I can go forward with my life."

Associate producer Simon Baumgart contributed to this story.

WRENTHAM, Mass. — Court documents indicate the search of a secret "flop house" leased by former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez has turned up what police say could be key evidence in the murder case against him.

Search warrants records indicate that police searching the Franklin, Mass., apartment found a sweatshirt and baseball cap similar to what Hernandez wore the night of Odin Lloyd was killed.

A state trooper wrote that the clothing could help place Hernandez at the crime scene and establish his location before the killing.

The records also indicate police found boxes of ammunition in the apartment.

Hernandez is accused of orchestrating Lloyd's execution-style shooting June 17, after Lloyd angered Hernandez by speaking to certain people at a nightclub.

His attorneys say the evidence against Hernandez is circumstantial and he's eager to clear his name.

Kevin Manahan of USA Today reports that a silver SUV has been seized from Hernandez's uncle's house, and gives details on the seizure:

A silver SUV towed Friday night from the garage of Andres Valderrama, Aaron Hernandez's uncle, has been impounded, and it could be connected to a double homicide in Boston that has become part of the investigation into Hernandez's alleged killing of friend Odin Lloyd.

The Valderrama home, at the corner of Lake and Dewey avenues, has been the focus of a lot of attention during the investigations: Carlos Ortiz, who police believe was in the car with Lloyd on the morning he was shot and killed, was nabbed at the home on Wednesday; police removed evidence from a detached garage during a subsequent search; and now a Toyota 4-Runner, with Rhode Island plates, has been removed from the garage.

While refusing further comment, Boston police commissioner Ed Davis said Friday there "is a lot of information that's come in over the past week or so. We're actively pursuing leads right now." But he added that his office will join with other officials in Massachusetts and Connecticut "in not going any further" because of the ongoing investigation.

The New York Times brings us more info about the police investigation into Hernandez's role in the June 2012 double homicide.

The twin killing at a city intersection early one morning last July remains unsolved. The police knew that Hernandez had been in the nightclub, Cure, that night but considered his presence of no significance.

“They knew he was in there,” the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing, said of the club. “But it was thought that he was just a sports star at the bar.”

When Hernandez was linked last week to the killing of Odin Lloyd, a 27-year-old Boston semiprofessional football player, the Boston police decided to take another look at his possible role in last year’s killings.

Further investigation led the police to tie Hernandez to that killing, said the official, who declined to discuss any evidence in the case. The official said that Hernandez was believed to have fired the shots that killed the two men, Daniel Abreu, 29, and Safiro Furtado, 28.
