2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Royals have zero wins against left handed starters this year. The only team in MLB with that distinction.

Hottovy got sent down for Mazarro.

Why? I know he struggles against righties, but it's the AL - it's not like there's a lot of strategic roster moves that need to be made. The AL is tailor-made for the LOOGY and it appears that lefties simply can't touch the guy.

Isn't there room on the Royals roster for a lockdown LOOGY? I'm admittedly biased, but it seems like Hottovy has a hell of a lot more use to a winning team as a LOOGY than Mazarro has as a mopup guy.

Yost has never believed in a pitcher getting out only certain types of hitters.

And to a degree I understand that in the NL - you need those bench spots.

But the Bosox and Orioles just played a 17 inning game where they used two bench players.

Bench spots aren't at a premium for AL teams. Why would you not place a value on a guy that lefties simply can't see?

It's just standard Royals jackassery, IMO.

My thoughts when I saw the news. Hottovy seems to own lefthanded hitters. Why he was left in to face righties I don't know.

Mazarro is trash. The guy blows.

Unfortunately we now have a guy who can't get out any type of hitters.

I agree, but I can't blame him. Our starters are so bad that we need even more in the bullpen.

Glass refutes rumors that he’s interested in selling Royals
By BOB DUTTON
The Kansas City Star

The rumors and whispers are escalating again – likely as no coincidence to the Royals’ disappointing start – that owner David Glass wants to sell the ballclub. That he might even be close to doing so, in fact.

“Nonsense,” Glass said. “I’ve never spoken to anyone about selling the club. I have no idea where that comes from. Who knows? But I have not been contacted by anyone.

“Everybody in baseball knows that I’m committed, and my family is committed; that we’re going to own the Royals, and that the Royals are going to be in Kansas City and that we’re going to make the team a contender again.

“We’ve not thought of anything else.”

Glass said he had no interest in selling even a minority share of the club.

“If anybody tells you that they understand we’re trying to sell the club,” he said, “you ask them, ‘to whom?’ I’ve not talked to anyone, nor has any of my family talked to anyone. I don’t understand where this stuff comes from.”

Glass said he is as disappointed as any fan at the club’s 9-19 start.

“I’ve been watching from upstairs,” he said, “and it’s not any easier to watch from up there than it is from fan level. But it’s going to get better. My confidence isn’t shaken in the least. We’re going to turn this thing around. Hang in there with us.”

I'm always the wet blanket on this stuff, but unless I'm missing something I have little confidence there's anyone else in KC that's going to own the team and pony up any more money than Glass has... unless they move the team out of town. That's why the team sat in limbo for eons to begin with. Don't give me that Mark Cuban crap.

Aren't the Royals contactually obligated to the city to stay for a while after the rennovations?

I just would prefer an Owner that would run it like money is no object. Cuban strikes me as that type. Pipe dream I know.....
