X-Factor's Inside the Huddle-mauled

In order not to offend our readers, the following has been rated MA-17 (mature audiences only) by the Society of American Journalists and Deranged Sports Columnists (SAJDSC). Why the unusually harsh rating standard?

First of all, Freddy Krueger would be squeamish at the way Chiefs players have been lost to season-ending injuries. And the 89-10 combined mauling that Kansas City has suffered the past two weeks at the hands of Buffalo and Detroit would have been edited from the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” for excessive violence.

Ugly is too kind of a word to describe the start to KC’s season. Yet, for as agonizing as it’s been, there’s one thing to keep in mind. The Chiefs are just one game out of first place in the AFC West. And, with a win at San Diego on Sunday, we could be in first place. Possible? Yes. Easy? Not by any stretch.
While Kansas City’s play has been as unbearable as Rosanne Barr’s singing, keep in mind that the gap between being terrible and being in the playoffs is surprisingly narrow in the NFL.

Just look at the numbers. For example, quarterback Matt Cassel was 15-of-22 against Detroit. On most Sundays, that’s pretty respectable.
Unfortunately, three of seven that weren’t caught by Cassel’s receivers were picked off by Detroit defenders. Cassel had seven interceptions the entire 2010 season. He’s had four in two games this season. Remember that a year ago, Cassel was an All-Pro quarterback with only two weapons in the passing game - tight end Tony Moeaki and wideout Dwayne Bowe. We lost Moeaki, but Leonard Pope is more than adequate. We’ve also added wideout Steve Breaston and, perhaps this week, we’ll see the return of Jonathan Baldwin.
It wouldn’t take that much to revive a passing offense that ranks 32nd in the league (110.5 ypg). But if that’s going to happen someone else has to step up. Bowe has 118 receiving yards in two games. No one else on the team has more than 33 yards.

Perhaps even more amazing is that the Chiefs are ranked seventh in the league with 129.5 yards rushing per game. That’s despite having Jamaal Charles for basically one game. Our success as a team rests with our running game and that can still happen with Dexter McCluster, Thomas Jones and Le’Ron McLain as a backfield by committee.Critics say that McCluster is too small to be an every-down back. But they said the same thing about Charles before he rushed for 1,120 yards in 2009 and 1,467 yards in 2010.
The NFL is all about opportunity. When the opportunity comes, who will emerge as the next great star?

When runningbacks Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson no longer figured into KC’s future, somebody had to step into that role. Now that Charles is gone for the season, it’s McCluster’s opportunity to show whether he’s capable of being a great NFL runningback.Keeping Jackie Battle on the roster adds to our depth and perhaps McLain can recapture the season he had in 2008 when he rushed for 902 yards.

Where’s the defense? After giving up 91 points in just two games, the bigger question is with the defense and, in particular, a linebacker corps that has disappeared. The ineptitude of our pass defense (ranked 21st, 251.5 ypg) is exceeded only by our rushing defense (25th, 126 ypg). We didn’t sack Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford one time while strong safety Jon McGraw (10) and free safety Kendrick Lewis (9) combined for 19 tackles.

When the safeties account for 19 tackles that’s a horror movie in the making.
Of course, players also have to make plays when given the chance.
McGraw had the opportunity for a pick-six early in the game, but instead turned six points into a stumble and fumble.

It’s been that kind of “Nightmare at Arrowhead.” At the end of the day, however, whether you’ve been outscored in two games by 81 points or two points, 0-2 is still 0-2. Sunday is our playoff game. It’s our Super Bowl. If the Chiefs win, they’re back in the AFC West title chase and, just maybe, they can still salvage their season. If they lose, and fall to 0-3, then the chances of recovery are about as good as expecting Freddy Krueger to save our life by performing a Heimlich maneuver. It ain’t going to happen. Another loss on Sunday and things could get ugly . . . as in Jason-without-his-mask ugly.

I blame the face paint and the foam hat squeezing your head for your fandumb. This team sucks ass from the top to the bottom. Let me guess, you were part of the "it's only the preseason crowd."

At what point would you think that this team sucks? What does the record need to be in your eyes before you open up to the truth?

Admitting that they suck will only ease your burden of the heartache this team is going to give you.

That's a problem with that kind of attitude. It breeds an atmosphere of never needing to improve. Sometimes you need to admit the truth.

Just wait, we are on pace to shatter the 1985 amount of suck.

I'm simply tired of mediocrity and failed expectations of this franchise.

History says otherwise as this has been the worst two-game scoring differential to open a season in franchise history.
