kcbob,
I think the way the formula is, 158.3 is the max the rating can be. ------------------ bk |

kcbob,
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe in the rating systme 158.3 is as high as the rating goes. It is not an unlimited measuring system. Dev ~working with a limited memory device... ------------------ GO CHIEFS!!!! Time to eat Seachicken!! |

I'm not certain what the formula criteria are and I certainly don't understand the whole thing. However, upon it's creation, it was believed that NO QB is going to connect on 100% of his passes so they set the "perfection" bar a little lower. Kinda like grading on a curve.

Well I think it's fairly obvious that the maximum rating is 158.3. Maybe I should restate my question and ask "Why is there a max in the first place?"
Then again, I could see a max if it was something like 100. A batting average max is 1.000. I understand that. But 158.3???? I'd like the drugs they were doing when they came up with that. ------------------ Frodo lives!! Go Chiefs!! |

Is everyone ready to attend QB rating 101??
The QB rating is broken down into 4 factors: Factor 1: (pass completions / Pass Attempts) / .2 Factor 2: (yards / Pass Attempts) / 4 Factor 3: (touchdowns / Pass Attempts) / .05 Factor 4: (.95 - (interceptions / Pass Attempts)) / .04 ((Fact1 + Fact2 + Fact3 + Fact4) * 100) / 6 = qbrating There will be a test! The system is designed to grade a QB's effectiveness over the course of the season, rather than rate his performance for a single game. Thus, while a QB might complete 95% of his passes in one game, it is highly unlikely that one would complete that percentage over a season. (The season record is 70.55%.)
Same for interceptions. To attain the highest possible score on that component, a QB would have to have no interceptions for the season. (Not going to happen.) The average yards/pass perfect score requires an average of 12.5 yards/completion. The NFL record is 11.17 and has stood since 1957.
|

And to obtain the maximum possible score on touchdowns/pass requires that he throw a touchdown 11.9% of the time. The record of 13.9% has stood since 1943.

And not to pick nits, but the formula for completion percentage is:
((100(comp/att))-30)*.05=x *note:if x is less than 0, x=0, if result is more than 2.375, x=2.375 Yards gained per attempt: ((yds/att)-3)*.25=y *note:same as above note Percentage of TD passes: ((TD/att)*100)*.2=z *note: 2.375 maximum value for z Percentage of INT: 2.375-(((INT/att)*100)*.25)=a *note:if a is less than 0, a=0 To calculate total QB rating: ((x+y+z+a)/6)*100=QB Rating
|

It's interesting to me that, though Warner's receivers give him lots of yards after the catch, he also leads the league in air_yards per attempt. Also, note that Grbac has gotten a higher percentage of his passing yards through the air than anyone in the league. His AIRFRAC is 79%, which means only 21% of his yards have come after the catch. Compare this to Gannon, say, whose AIRFRAC of 54% means that 46% of his passing yards have come from his receivers after the catch, more than twice as big a share as Grbac's receivers have given him.
