Everyone is failing Chiefs

As an outsider, I've come to the conclusion that you all spend too much time infighting about silly things. So I thought I'd make it simple.

Cassel is failing the Chiefs. He's underperforming. He's off-target with long throws and is getting shell-shock.

Pioli is failing the Chiefs. He didn't do enough in the offseason to secure better players, especially on the O-line.

Haley is failing the Chiefs. He's not calling games good enough and not delegating enough.

The Chiefs players are failing the Chiefs. Some are unmotivated, some are detrimental with their attitudes (cough cough LJ couch), some are playing under their potential, and a whole bunch just really suck and shouldn't be playing at all.

The beat writers and columnists are failing the Chiefs. They expect miracles immediately and because they're not seeing them they're tearing the team a new asshole.

The fans are... well, the fans seem okay. Frankly, they've put up with a shit product and the whole Herm/Carl thing. The fact that the stadium is even half-filled is a testament to your intestinal fortitude.

I think that about covers it?

Having said all that, I still think the trio of Pioli, Haley, and Cassel can do good things there. It's just going to take more patience, and more ugliness, until the overall team talent level has been raised a few notches.

I respectfully disagree. I think he'd be fine, with better support. Do I think he's Peyton Manning or Tom Brady? No. But he's a lot better than some of what's being trotted out there at QB.

I think there's a clear pack of very solid NFL QBs right now: Peyton Manning, Rogers, Brees, Roethlsomething, Favre, Brady, and Rivers. After that, everyone else is in one of two categories:

1.) Middle Of The Pack. Young guys who haven't fully established themselves, older guys on the downslope, good players who aren't playing that good right now, average players who are playing a bit over their heads right now.

2.) Suckballs who shouldn't be starting, and wouldn't be if the NFL had higher quality QBs available.

IMO Cassel is in the "Middle Of The Pack" group, and I qualify him as one of the "good players who aren't playing that good right now". Whereas, for example, I'd classify a Kyle Orton as one of the "average players who are playing a bit over their heads right now".

And I think, by and large, those seven guys I named as the top group are the QBs who can elevate a bad team to average, or an average team to a playoff contender, or a playoff contender to a Super Bowl contender. So, if the Chiefs had one of those seven, instead of 1 win they might have 2, maybe 3 wins right now. But aside from those seven guys, any other QB is probably equally screwed; I don't think Orton, Cutler, Romo, McNabb, or any other QB would have more wins as a Chief than Cassel.

Maybe Cassel got a bit more money than was warranted. But, then again, so did Stafford and Sanchez as rookies. And neither of those guys are doing much better than Cassel.

Excuse me? Did you see me "lecturing Chiefs fans on how to be Chiefs fans"? I was lecturing Internet posters on how to get along by not squabbling over petty things.

Whether Pioli and Cassel suck are not petty or silly things. And these Internet posters who are agonizing over the Chiefs are... Chiefs Fans.

Hell, the "Cassel is failing Chiefs" thread is straight from a Chiefs fanzine.

Somewhere the solution or answer to turning these Chiefs around is lurking just beneath the surface or so it seems to me. Lots of new personnel, ideas and management systems have been introduced but all have failed to gain traction over what was here before Pioli-Haley showed up.

What bothers me is the lapdog mentality of Haley who seems to be the point man for the mad genius, Pioli, as he (Pioli) continues to experiment in his enclosed and highly secure Defcon1 laboratory. Need a trial balloon floated? Todd can do that. Need a player or two marginalized? Todd was hired and lives for this.

The scene is starting to remind me of my old Flight Commander back in the day who was of the mindset that, "The beatings will continue until the morale improves".

Is this current leadership in place at One Arrowhead Drive all that much different?

The funny thing is, you've got three guys in their own uniquely tough situations.

Pioli: trying to prove he wasn't just standing around in New England while Belichick did all the brainy work.

Haley: trying to prove he can be a head coach.

Cassel: trying to prove he can be a legitimate team-carrying starting QB.

Perhaps things would be going smoother if only one or two of those were "in play". If, for example, Haley was just a coordinator, and Pioli had hired a Jon Gruden and traded for a Jey Cutler. Or, if Haley had an experienced GM and a veteran QB. Or, if Cassel had an experienced GM and a veteran head coach.

And the jury is still out on whether any, or all, of those three can do what they were hired to do. Personally, I think they can. But, much like getting the roster in order will be a season-long painful process (and might extend into next season), so might the procedure of getting those three solidly on their feet and moving in the proper direction. Hey, Belichick failed in his first attempt, and many people forget that, in 2001, the Pats started 0-1 and were losing to the Jets when Mo Lewis changed the fate of the organization; at that point, there were grumblings that Kraft had hired the wrong guy, Belichick wasn't cut out to be a head coach but only a coordinator, he was being too hard on the players, etc.,. (Sound familiar?)
