Dumb idea of the day: Let Alex Smith play out his contract

http://www.arrowheadpride.com/2014/4...t-his-contract

A year ago I suggested that Alex Smith should be extended because the price would never be lower. Obviously 99% of the forum was against me, but the deal I suggested would be a bargain today.

Now paid writers are literally suggesting to let Alex play it out when there is no chance that the Chiefs could match free agent offers for him. Their defense is that he could get hurt. Wow, and if he gets hurt, who plays QB? Chiefs are screwed either way

Best case scenario if we don't extend Alex soon is the franchise tag and that means massively overpaying for another key position

I remember this as well.

Can he sustain that? That is the multi-million dollar question.
No thats the apparently 4 years $100 million question.

I don't know if it was I you are referring to, but I did indeed post this based on an interview with him on 810. He very specifically said that he'd already made his money and didn't want to break the bank. He wants a superbowl.

Two things however might play against this statement.

1) Condon (sp) is his agent, and needs to think about his reputation as an agent. It is in Condon's best interest to get as much as he can get. Let's say Alex is sincere and signs some team friendly deal that is well below what Cutler received. How does that make Condon look as an agent?

2) While I honestly believe Smith is 100% genuine in wanting to do a team friendly deal, he also wants to be the starter for several years. If he signs TOO friendly of a deal, then he'll essentially make it too easy for the team to replace him if some hyped hotshot gets pulled in the draft (he already has some experience with that). So on one hand he wants to do a team friendly deal to help the team get to and win a superbowl, but on the other, he wants a team to commit to him. (at least that's the way I see it).

I think thats a fair level of compensation. Anything north of $15m a year I think is too much.

Second half of the season the players were more comfortable with each other, they knew they were going to have to put up bigger numbers against the teams with higher powered offenses so Reid took the reins off - and the offense performed really well. However, while we certainly were up against higher powered offenses, our offense was playing against arguably weaker defenses than the first half of the season. Tough to predict how much we can take from that either.

Next year we will be playing a number of teams that are balanced with good offenses and good defenses.

Bad news: All the "team-building" done on the O line last year is out the window with over half of the positions being played by new players this year. We are starting over from square one when it comes to a unit that is used to playing together and building that trust. This alone could be disastrous as everything the offense is able to do hinges on the line.

We so far have not added a legitimate #2 WR to go with our current #2 (quality) WR in Bowe.

Good news: Second year with the same OC coordinator and offensive scheme for Smith (only the 2nd time in his career for that). Second year in the same system for the offense. Second year as an NFL player for Fisher and our other 2013 draftees that figure to see more playing time this year. Kelce will be healthy and may provide a spark and an additional playmaker we didn't have last year. And lastly, the draft hasn't occurred and while we are down a 2nd, the draft is deep and figures to have impact players in later rounds, we may find a WR in there that can add to our arsenal. Stranger things have happened.
Not much to disagree with in this post.

Solid take. It was the tale of two seasons last year. 1st half horrid O's we faced. 2nd half horrid D's. Who is the real team?

Also the thing that concerned me more than anything was the way we finished at 2-6. What this team, this D and Alex are is really pretty much an unknown.
None of them are garbage but this year should really clarify things.

I understand the thought of not wanting to pay him $20 mil a year. I don't either. But a contract that averages that amount doesn't mean he will get that much each and every year. I am sure that any contract that he gets will be one that we can get out of after year 4. So for those first years of the contract he would be very affordable.
The salary cap goes up every year and will continue to do so. The proportionality of a contract would also be offset by the increase in the salary cap.

Not pulled out of his ass. Smith absolutely said he was in a different position than these other players (referencing the recent deals to cutler and flacco I believe) and that he wanted to do a deal that didn't break the bank. Smith wants to win more than anything else. He was 1.1 in the old CBA. He's already made a ton of money and he want's more than anything to prove to the many many many naysayers that they were wrong. How many f'n times has he heard, "Smith will never win a Superbowl"?

Before that, it was "Smith will never make the playoffs", "Smith can never go toe to toe with an Elite QB", "Smith can't ever win a playoff game". Dude wants to shut up his critics more than he wants a payday.

Not only that however - he earned an economics degree in 2 years... he's more than likely invested well and knows he'll make plenty of money long after his FB career is over. Smith wants a ring and would sign a team friendly deal but for the two wrenches I mentioned in my previous post.

If there's one thing the franchise tag isn't, it's cap-friendly.
