The future of football, 10-15 years from now...

I was reading and watching some videos on tight ends occasionally playing tackle.

Some college teams have tinkered with it. The Pats did some of it in the playoffs a couple years back and the Chiefs have even done it at least once.

Do you see it as a future trend in the NFL -- either bigger tight ends that can play tackle and always be eligible as receivers, or tackles that we coach to catch footballs better?

I suppose if it was a current trend, that 400 lbs Baylor tight end would have found a job in the NFL...

Edit: This is the kind of stuff I'm talking about:

If a player is lined up at tackle, they can't be an eligible receiver. WTF are you talking about?

They can't be?

I thought the Pats were doing it like crazy against the Ravens a couple years back?

I know for sure we had Kelce lined up as a tackle for one play, I believe it was last year. See if I can find it.

If you are lined up as one of the five down lineman, you are an ineligible receiver.

Thanks for the rule clarification -- but please explain the Patriots doing so in the OP.

JFC, do you pay attention to anything other than your own asshole? The Patriots did this in a game against the Ravens exploiting a loophole in the rules. The Ravens threw a fit about it after the game and the NFL has since made this formation illegal. It was pretty big news at the time. Tom Brady even made some snarky remark about how maybe other teams should study the rule book.

So to answer your original question, no this will not become a trend in the NFL.

As an addendum to the earlier posts, anyone who is covered by another player at the LOS is not eligible. Since you have to have seven players on the line, five will be ineligible regardless.

This talks about the Patriots play as well as receiver eligibility:

http://www.footballzebras.com/2015/0...ity-reporting/

"All coaches have a few plays that require extra blocking protection, which is typically accomplished by having one of the linemen outside of the interior line position where an eligible receiver is required. To make the formation compliant, the lineman playing out of position must report as “eligible” to the referee."

The pats exposed a flaw in the rulebook when they had a receiver line up as a pseudo right tackle which then made the left most lineman on the field an eligible receiver, although not verbally declared. The receiver would report as ineligible which then the defense would quickly have to use deduction to figure out who is the eligible receiver. It's dirty in the sense a normal one-play declaration to report as tackle eligible applies to a player wearing number 50-79 clearly announces who is declaring themselves as a pseudo tight end but the Pats went a round about way to disguise the player

To answer the OP, it's not happening

If there are six down lineman you can declare one as tackle eligible, but this has to be reported to the refs who then announce it publicly for a one play eligibility
