2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

It actually looks like a decent deal for us. The two guys we are getting are young and pitchers.

The Pirates have acquired pitcher Vin Mazzaro and first baseman Clint Robinson from the Royals for pitchers Luis Rico and Luis Santos. The team has also acquired pitcher Zach Stewart from the Red Sox for a player to be named later.

Mazzaro, 26, has spent time as both a starter and reliever with the Athletics and the Royals. He threw 44 innings with Kansas City last season, compiling a 5.73 ERA and a 4.30 FIP.

Robinson, 27, made his major league debut last season, receiving four plate appearances with the Royals. He hit .292/.393/.452 in 570 plate appearances in Triple-A, but was old for the league.

Luis Santos started seven games for the Pirates' Dominican Summer League team. He was fairly effective, tossing 30 2/3 innings with a 2.64 ERA and a 2.22 FIP. Santos is just 21-years-old, and is still a while away from making an impact in the majors.

At 17, Rico is the youngest player in the deal. He threw 26 1/3 innings for the team's Venezuelan Summer League, registering a 3.76 ERA and a 3.92 FIP.

That'll never happen. After the Glass family takes their fluctuating owner "salaries", i'm sure there's little left over.

Glass also disputed the notion, generally based on industry estimates by Forbes magazine, that he has pocketed more than $100 million in operating profit since purchasing the club in 2000 from the estate of Ewing Kauffman.
“From the time we’ve owned the team until now,” Glass said, “accumulatively we’ve done no better than break even. We’ve actually subsidized it slightly during that period of time.
“Look, you might have a $65-to-$70 million payroll, but then you go out and spend $25-$30 million in amateur bonuses. Everyone says, ‘Well, your payroll is less than some of the other teams,’ but those other teams were spending less than $10 million in amateur bonuses.
“In a number of those years, if you add what we’re spending on amateur bonuses to our (major-league) salaries, we’re spending a lot of money.”
If he's trying to make the argument that he's spending around the same as other teams, (which there's no way that's even remotely possible) then DM is spending money on the wrong people

Well, David is basically saying that we ignored the fact that the Royals have spent way more in the draft than most teams, and our scouting budget (so we have more scouts than other teams?), etc. And its true, fans do often ignore that stuff and focus only on the opening day payroll.

Given all that though, the CBA and the new Fox contract changes things. We cant spend $20MM+ in signing bonuses any more, our bonus pool in the last draft was capped at 6 million, and in 2014 we should be seeing a small bump from our share of the new national FOX contract.

We're kinda screwed with our terrible local TV deal though, we signed it before the value of sports programming exploded, and our now way-under-market deal runs through the end of the decade.

Okay, did I miss something ... Is it posted earlier in this thread, but reports are coming out that we have had talks with the Mets for RA Dickey?

That's somewhat new (though it has been floated since the Mets are in full-on rebuild mode).

If you could get Dickey for, say, a package that doesn't include Myers (maybe Yordano Ventura and another piece), that's very interesting, IMO.

rotoworld is reporting it too, saying we are not willing to trade Myers for him. (obviously, are they kidding? He's under contract for just one more season and he'll be 38)

If he doesn't cost us much in prospects, that could work.

No long term record of success for a 38 year old pitcher with 1 year left on his contract? I wouldn't be excited to give a big package up for him. Especially since what I have read was they want a Catcher and OF. (Perez or Meyers?)

One thing to keep in mind is that R.A. Dickey is the only active knuckleball pitcher, and he apparently figured out how to control the pitch last season. So, we wouldn't be worried about him losing 1 or 2 mph on his fastball. As long as he doesn't lose it, he could pitch well into his 40's like Wakefield.

That said, he's only signed for one more year, so he sure as hell isn't worth what the Mets apparently asked for.

Dickey is a nice stop gap option for us. Certainly wouldn't cost much in trade given he only has one year remaining on his deal and he is relatively cheap. Although I am not sure I like having two of our three pitching acquisitions on one year deals. Leaves a lot of work to be done the following season.

It's a good point. I guess it all depends on what you part with in a trade for him. His numbers last year make him the ace on the staff that can't be debated.
