Vance Walker
He seems to be the forgotten guy of the offseason since his signing. Judging by what I've read on this board I think a lot of people don't know much about him and I even noticed some people aren't aware that we plugged the hole left by Tyson Jackson by signing him.
In Dorsey's pre-draft PC he was asked about the difference from year one to year two and he specifically stated that now he understands that with these new age 3-4/hybrid defenses you no longer have the two traditional 5techs in a scheme like Sutton's. You need a 5tech end and a 3tech. So basically we were playing with two 5techs most of the time (Jackson and Devito) when we needed a guy like Vance to play hate 3tech DE. This is what allowed teams to get away with the quick passing game. Now instead of a guy like Jackson who we all know can't put pressure on the QB or penetrate we have one of the best interior pass rushers in the league last season at that spot (40+ pressures in '13). Vance has a chance to make our defense work in a way that wasn't possible last season. Along with Ford our pass rush is much improved inside and out and we no longer have Lewis and Dunta on the back end to worry about either. You can expect this defense to be much improved in 2014. |

We all know that he will be an upgrade over Jackson as an interior pass rusher. That's why most of us didn't want us to draft a 5-tech in this draft, which we didn't. Our DL and front 7 as a whole should be much better at pressuring the QB.

It's not a matter of losing Lewis and Robinson. Robinson was replaced mid way, but we had no depth after injuries and he was the next best. They never replaced Lewis with Abdullah, which worries me. If Abdullah is better, why didn't he replace Lewis more often.
Maybe I'm looking into that more than necessary, but it concerns. Yes, we got rid of those two, which is a good thing. And replacing Jackson with a better player is good too, but our secondary is still an issue in my eyes. Forget about the oline and Lack of fixing it in the draft, they didn't lose us the game. |

Walker is not really a better player, he just a different player
run stuff vrs penetration I believe Jackson was like 5th on the team with 4 sacks last year btw. He was way underrated by people around here.

Jackson isn't a bad player. Frankly, he could have been okay if you had a guy who could also play 3-tech as a pass rusher on the other side. We had run stuffers on both ends. The Chiefs kept DeVito and canned Jackson because DeVito has a lot more versatility to play multiple positions that Jackson doesn't. |

It fits the way the league is going and the scheme Sutton wants to play. we want penetrate and go after the QB and react to the run. Doesn't mean Jackson sucks though.
