The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

I'm just saying thats what you get if you are all about value. Yeah, you want to get value, but there are many other factors that come into play.

No it's not a bad year. Geno Smith has potential to be a pro bowl player at his position. Could he bust? Yes but that's a risk the Chiefs need to take. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is not the way the Chiefs should continue to go because playing it safe is how the Chiefs got into this position in the first place.

Because then we would have to try and BS some team into trading for the piece of shit in a few years when it's proven he's nothing more than a never-will-be?

Oh, you mean like the 49ers are trying to do right now.....

No. I'm frustrated that there are not much alternative. If the Chiefs take Geno at the top I'll accept it. But I don't have to like it.

With my belief that the Chiefs will eventually evolve into a 43D I was warming up to a 34-DE/43-DT type (and a QB in the 2nd round). And the only one who seemed to be close to the top pick value there was Star Lotilelei. But of course he may never get even drafted now.

I'm amazed that Chiefs fans want them to do what they've always done with no success to show for it.

Why you think they transition to a 43 baffles me. They just brought in a 34 D coordinator and basically said they are staying with the 34. But ok.

Yes and the Chiefs have consistently tried to do it the safe way and we have yet to luck into our franchise quarterback yet. But hell lets continue doing the same thing and hope it works someday

???

Do you remember anything about that draft at all?

Aaron Rodgers was suppose to have been a top 5 pick. Thanks to the system he played in, teams viewed him as "risky".

So what turned out to be more risky? Passing on or taking Aaron Rodgers?

This isn't hard.

I honestly think at least one of them would have panned out if a stubborn Marty hadn't glued their behinds to the bench for years. He totally ignored developing them. I think he was pulling a bit of Haley-vs-Piolli on Peterson.

"An NFL source tells the Arizona Republic that the Cardinals are "exploring the possibility" of trading for Alex Smith.
Per the source, "no deal is in place." That means the Cardinals are not the team that was previously reported to have a deal effectively done with the Niners. That team was likely the Chiefs, but that doesn't mean San Francisco will stop shopping Smith around ahead of the league's new year on March 12. By pitting teams against each other, they can maximize the haul they'll get for their former starting quarterback."

please Cardinals, PLEASE do it. He's exactly what you need!

Frankie lives in imaginary Frankie-land where you can't compare Alex Smith to other failed #1 draft picks or to Matt Cassel, where the Chiefs are switching to a 43, and where Geno Smith isn't worth a top draft choice but Star Lululemon is.

LOL.

I think we are just never going to agree.

I've been a 49er fan for a long time and I've seen a number of GMs come through. I've seen some really good ones (Baalke is really good) and some really bad ones (Terry Donahue...the name makes me sick).

The one thing that the good ones have in common is that they move around alot moving both up and down in the draft, they aquire lots of picks (The Niners may have as many as 15 in April), and they seem to simply understand the process better. They don't reach. They don't marry themselves to any ONE player. If they miss out on one guy they have a backup plan. They measure the difference between the guy they want and the guy they may have to settle for and take risks accordingly.

The Kaep assertion...the 49er were pretty sure that nobody was going to take him in round one....but they did investigate trades to move up that far and were unsuccessful. They tried to move up to the top pick of the second round and were unsuccessful.

They stuck with it and got their guy.

Did they view Kaep as a can't miss prospect? No. They really liked him though and thought he had huge potential. He was the guy they wanted and a second round pick is good for a more risky player. They knew tho that Aldon Smith wouldn't be in striking distance of that second round pick...so they selected him at 7.

How has Ponder worked out in Minn? Locker in Tenn? Those were REACHES.

If the Chiefs really think that Geno is worthy of that pick...don't worry...they'll pick him. I just don't think they do.
