2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Read the article below. DM has a complete blind spot when it comes to Frenchy. I know we've talked about it ad nauseum, but this further confirms it. It's as if CF is the only option for Myers, so according to DM, we need to see what we have in Cain. I don't disagree with him, but dumbass, we KNOW what we have in Frenchy. There's over 4,400 MLB at bats that tell you. He doesn't have it. Waiting around for him to find the form from the one good year he's had is fool's gold.

Competitive Balance Lottery to shake up Draft
Small-market, low-revenue teams to get chance at extra picks

The lottery, it seems, has been designed to help small-market and lowest-revenue clubs gain more talent not just because they had a poor season. Many of the smaller-market clubs were proponents of a system with hard slotting. While that hasn't happened, this current system is designed, with this lottery a part of it, to give those clubs a competitive advantage compared to the status quo.

Teams eligible for '13 Lottery
Arizona D-backs Baltimore Orioles
Cleveland Indians Kansas City Royals
Oakland Athletics Pittsburgh Pirates
San Diego Padres Tampa Bay Rays
Cincinnati Reds Colorado Rockies
Miami Marlins Milwaukee Brewers
St. Louis Cardinals

This Lottery takes place Wednesday.

I'm glad the Cardinals made the list, they're definately low revenue.

St. Louis and Miami definitely don't belong, and Colorado and Arizona probably don't either.

Are these extra picks early in the draft? How do they decide who gets the picks and how many they get?

Quote:
The odds of winning a Draft pick in this lottery will be based on each team's winning percentage in the previous season. The half-dozen picks will be made at the conclusion of the first round, but after the compensation picks for free agents.

There will be a second group of six picks, coming after the conclusion of the second round. The teams from the first group that did not get one of the early picks will be re-entered, along with any other Major League team that receives any revenue sharing.

There's another wrinkle to this. These lottery picks can be traded. That's right, for the first time in Major League history, Draft picks can be dealt. But there are a series of conditions and limitations regarding such transactions.

Only a team that wins a pick in the lottery can trade it, meaning that selection can be traded just once. It can't be sold for cash, and it may only be dealt during the season. Trading can commence the day after the lottery is held and is allowed until the end of that regular season. So seeing a lottery pick or two involved in some July 31 Trade Deadline deals is a distinct possibility. They cannot be included in any Winter Meetings deals, however, with trading of picks again permitted at the beginning of the following regular season.

This isn't going to work anyway.

You can give the Royals and A's an infinite number of draft picks, but until they are willing to spend the money to retain their players, nothing will change.

the myth that the royals are completely cheap and get rid of their players due to cheapness continues, but in reality they've ponied up a lot over recent years.

Who is expendable in the hunt for starting pitching? Further, do you trade for a lot of pitching prospects or do you pick up current Major League starters?

Count me as an idiot because we've spent in the draft and Latin America. The Royals, however, have largely shied away from spending in FA, and this off-season will present a major test for where the organization is and what Glass and company are willing to do.

The fact that the payroll is lower now than it was several years ago, though the Royals should be closer to competing now than ever before, makes little sense.

The Royals have spent on infrastructure, the very basic thing that all ML organizations should do and have done for years. But not in KC. And now we're supposed to give Glass credit?

**** him. He's a piece of shit owner until he proves otherwise, which he hasn't done.

Escobar is signed through 2015. IIRC, he'll be 28 years old, and in his prime. He sticks around then, and he'll have a point.

Same with Butler, though I think he'll be a year older.

Gordon's done nothing worth being in this discussion other than being the 1st overall pick.

Perez will be 26 - right in his prime, should he become the player most of you (including myself) think he'll be.

Soria will be 30 when his contract expires.

Again, if you guys resign these players when they become stars, in their prime, asking for big money - then I'll change my opinion.

EDIT: Excellent points above, Deez.
