Do Geno fans have overinflated expectations?

Suppose we take Geno with the number one overall pick. What kind of career can we realistically expect from him? Realistically--if we actually use the statistics Geno fans like to toss around (especially those who hate Alex Smith)--statistics from www.pro-football-reference.com , we can, on average, expect Geno Smith-or any number 1 draft pick- to be Brad Johnson.

Is Brad Johnson a franchise QB?

Right now, from an overall career standpoint, Alex Smith isn't even a Brad Johnson according to pro-football-reference. However, looking at his last couple of years, his best years, he has topped Brad Johnson compared to Johnson's best two years when you look at QB rating.

If Reid and Dorsey believe that Alex Smith is on an upward trajectory careerwise, then we got him for a steal.

Anyway, here is an interesting article about draft picks based upon expected Career Approximate Values for each draft slot which argues that the current draft value chart is outdated and a new one needs to replace it. It was created by a Harvard economics student. The upshot of the value chart basically says that high draft picks are currently over-rated and mid-round draft picks are under-rated.

http://harvardsportsanalysis.wordpre...l-draft-picks/

Kind of interesting and worth the read.

We already have the veteran and a guy to push him.

So do the right thing Andy - draft a freakin' qb with the overall # 1

I wonder if Geno realized what a shithole Buffalo was yesterday and begged them not to pick him.

That'd be like flipping it around and dismissing a large part of what Geno did in college because he consistently played below average to terrible defenses and when he played someone like a K-State didn't play well at all. Does it take away from what he did or make him any less of a prospect? Uh no.

I like Geno...I wanted Geno...I still do...but I'm not losing any sleep over the fact he more than likely will be playing elsewhere in the NFL.
Vernon Davis carried the team on his back on that final drive. If Alex Smith converted just one third down in that NFC Championship game, we have a 49ers/Patriots Super Bowl. Alex Smith being clutch against that Saints D is akin to Cassel throwing over 400 yards against the Donks in garbage time. Alex Smith is absolute garbage. Geno may be garbage or a franchise QB, but this franchise is too chicken shit to find out. Thus, why they are 3-12 in playoff games since Super Bowl IV.

My expectations would be to get to enjoy watching my favorite football team make effort to win a championship and boom or bust he would be fun to watch over the ****tards they have been putting on the field.

My expectations would be to watch a QB get better with the team I can expect growing pains as long as he gets better and the team is on the right path. I would expect a lot out of Geno Smith to be the best he could be and would be worlds better than retread reeruns as in Alex Smith.

Why would you expect Geno to be better than Alex? Just curious. Coming out of college they have similar pass completion percentages, they have similar td/int ratios, they had fairly similar QB ratings. Where they diverge, really, is total yards (subsequently total tds and ints) and win/loss.

Total yards goes to Geno while win/loss goes decidedly to Alex.

Maybe Reid and Dorsey see Alex as having gone through the tough growing pains already.

And it's not "expect". It's "believe there is a realistic possibility".

There is no realistic possibility that Alex Smith is going to be more than a game manager. Because he has already proven what he is.

There is some realistic possibility that Geno Smith will be more than a game manager. He has the arm strength (which Alex does not), the accuracy, the intelligence, the work ethic, the attitude, the field vision, the mobility (in terms of avoiding pressure) and basically any- and everything else you would look for in a franchise quarterback for today's NFL.

Does that mean that he will be a franchise quarterback? Who knows. You can't "expect" that for any draft pick, because every rookie is an unknown. But you can hope for that. Which is the difference between Geno Smith and the other Smith. There's little to no hope with Alex. He is what he his. The only hope there is the hope that they can build the rest of the team to such a level that his limitations can be overcome.

Based upon your "definition" of a franchise caliber QB, none of those guys would project to be likely prospects.

If "willing a team to win" is what makes a QB franchise caliber, the Chiefs need to stay as far away from Geno as possible. Geno managed to "will" the Mountaineers to an astonishing 7-6 record last year (4-5 in conference). During the course of his college career, he managed to "will" his team to an 0-3 record against Ryan Nassib, who you don't even mention in the conversation as a franchise caliber QB in this year's draft. "Willing a team to win" requires a certain level of innate competitiveness, yet Geno stayed away from the Senior Bowl for fear of either injury or hurting his draft stock.

The only player the Chiefs should consider to be a franchise QB based on his ability to will a team to win is EJ Manuel. He's only the second player in NCAA history to win 4 Bowl games as QB. He didn't shy away from the Senior Bowl; he won the MVP. He doesn't throw as pretty of a ball as Geno. He doesn't have the gaudy stats like Geno. The big knock on him is that the Seminoles didn't win the Nat. Championship while he was there as many had hoped so "he sucked." But he is more of a "winner" than any of the other draft prospects at QB.

Would you be happy if the Chiefs selected him with the #1 overall pick?

This is what people refuse to realize.

With Geno, or even Barkley, there is POTENTIAL.

We already KNOW what Alex Smith is, he's been in the league for 7 years.

Kind of like Jim Plunkett (8 years), Phil Simms (6 years), Doug Williams (6 years), Trent Dilfer (6 years), Brad Johnson (8 years), and Drew Brees (8 years)?

Easy, we draft him and can build for long term and watch him blossom into the job. Who the **** knows but he would be a hell of a lot funner to watch than Alex that is for sure. They are nothing a like actually Geno wont be taking the sacks like Alex he can be elusive and make plays DOWN field.

Wow, you found one guy since the league has become a QB-dependent, pass-happy league.

Congrats.

I'm going to the casino tonight, and since I've seen 7-2 offsuit crack wired Aces once in my life, I'm going to play them every chance I get in the hopes I win, even though the odds are against me.
