Mock (5/2/13)

Assumptions:

1. Chiefs go 8-8, Alex Smith performs about how you expect him to. Chiefs are not interested in replacing him as starter.

2. Chiefs let Tyson Jackson, Tony Moeaki, and Kendrick Lewis walk.

3. Chiefs sign Terrance Copper, Geoff Schwartz, Husain Abdullah, and Thomas Gafford on 1-year deals.

4. Chiefs sign Albert long-term this offseason. Chiefs sign McCluster to a $12million/5 year deal, and Jon Asamoah to a $20 million/4 year deal.

5. The Chiefs lose their 3rd to the 49ers for Alex Smith.

On with the show:

1. DE Aaron Lynch, South Florida

Well, do Dorsey and Reid like workout warriors, or do they like workout warriors? This guy has unlimited potential.

2. OLB Trent Murphy, Stanford

A fantastic body/size comparison to the type of OLBs desired in NFL 3-4s, Murphy has Dion Jordan's size but only some of his athleticism. If he has a pretty good year but struggles (like seemingly all Stanford players do) at the Combine, he could be great value in the 2nd.

4. WR Odell Beckham Jr., WR, LSU

I continue drafting one-dimensional speed threats for the Chiefs.

5. QB Jeff Driskel, Florida

Powerful, duel threat QB with seemingly unlimited upside.

6. NT Mister Cobble, Kentucky

Four-year starter, works his ass off as a plugger with pocket-pushing ability.

7. ILB Jordan Zumwalt, UCLA

Really talented ILB, though undersized. Could excel behind DJ.

Saw this on twitter:

@SheilKapadia: 38 QBs taken in 3rd round or later since 2008. Not counting Foles, only quality starting-caliber one so far is Russell Wilson.

Doesn't matter, Chiefs will never learn. This team simply refuses to use a high draft pick on a college QB.

With that said there are multiple QB's in this upcoming class that the Chiefs would've taken #1. Just picked the wrong year to be 1.1.

At this moment if we are taking a DE in the 1st, I prefer Stephon Tuitt from Notre Dame. Tuitt is a very good and is built perfectly for the position (6'6", 305-pounds). On top of that he actually has quality pass rushing abilities. He is only going to get much better with better coaching.

Agree.

The 2014 QB class is substandard as it sits right now. I don't think Bridgewater is even close to Geno Smith in terms of deep ball accuracy, pocket presence and understanding of the position.

And you can do a comparison of guys from 2013 and 2014. It's not close. Manuel is better than Thomas. Geno Smith is better than Bridgewater. Taj Boyd and Ryan Nassib are pretty equal. David Fales is no where close to Matt Barkley. Aaron Murray and Tyler Wilson are comparable. AJ McCarron isn't as good as Lance Jones. And the rest of the class is just bleh.

The only thing to get excited about is potentially Oregon's Marcus Mariota or Utah State's Chuckie Keeton (who I like a ton). Manziel is an interesting case subject for future debate, but there are some questions about his game. But those three guys are underclassmen who may or may not come out.

It's a mediocre draft class at the position at the very best, especially if Keeton and Mariota and Manziel stay in school.

Definitely not as good as 2013.

Disagree with that. While I don't think AJ is an elite prospect right now, I have seen him make NFL throws (NFL route concepts, progressions, drops) against teams that utilize some NFL defensive philosophies (M based fire-zones, designed traps, fire-zones out of subs, etc).

While I think that he's largely a product of the team he plays with, he's made some throws that were absolutely outstanding on tape. I don't really like the kid as a 1-2 round prospect right now but I'm not going to pretend he's like Landry Cassel who wilts under pressure and struggles completing passes down the field that aren't 3/4 vert concepts against 5DB personnel.

I agree with the last sentence here.

McCarron has shown an ability to step up and perform in high pressure situations.

I don't like him as a high round prospect, but I can not summarily dismiss that part of his game, which I have always argued is a necessary trait for a franchise QB.
