SceneItAll Tournament: Round 1, Heat 97

The rules:

In Round 1, I'm going to put up three randomly selected scenes from the nomination thread.

You'll vote for your ONE favorite scene among the three. The key here is FAVORITE. We're not talking about the 'best' or 'most powerful' or 'most meaningful'. We're talking about the scene that you most enjoy watching, however you define that.

The winners will move on. I'll also take the 10 highest-scoring second-place scenes and they'll advance as wild cards.

Some of our nominations did not include clips. This will be noted. If you find a clip, please post it and let me know so I can update it if it moves on.

Just take the first part. Ignore the Family Guy version that follows.

Well...no.

I am learning in this tournament that I do not watch a lot of movies.

I've seen bits and pieces of this movie, though, and I must confess that I have not seen the allure of it.

It's a funny scene, but a lot of these clips don't fare as well taken out if context. Especially f you've never watched the movie.

I am starting to think that perhaps Pulp Fiction is my favorite movie because I have never seen another movie.

Pulp Fiction is a pretty good movie. It even made everyone forget that John Travolta is gay for a while.

On the Waterfront, and it isn't even a question.

If you don't understand this scene, you didn't enjoy the 5 seasons of The Wire as much as you thought you did.

Watch the whole movie, the compromises and concessions faced and hashed out here, it's all about what the American Dream does to the American Dream, and how it all ends in ashes.

Brando's character was one of true talent, but he played along with the system for the enrichment of his 'friends.' And his friends sought to reward him with a position that rewarded laziness and mediocrity. 'Don't be great, fleece the masses to our enrichment, and we'll set it so you can be comfortable without effort.' The seamy underbelly of the American Dream.

I'm a decided post-Bonnie and Clyde cineast, but On the Waterfront is powerful storytelling.

On the Waterfront. No question. It's a great scene and the movie holds up great.
What doesn't show in the clip is that the older brother is essentially signing his own death warrant by not getting Brando to play ball.
