Stud QBs and their stud contracts.

I've been thinking about this for a few days now, it's only a roughly sketched out thought, so bare with me.

Isn't it true that your best oppotunity to win a Super Bowl with an elite QB is before you give him an insanely huge contract?

Every time on these teams, when a QB is given a huge contract that befits an elite QB, the rest of his roster becomes depleted as the team can no longer afford elite complimentary pieces.

The 49ers, Falcons, Ravens and Seahawks were all tearing it up in the playoffs last year because their QBs didn't create hardly any cap hit at all, so their teams were stacked. Versus the Brady-led Patriots or the Rodgers-led Packers, who had huge holes all over their rosters.

Roethlisberger hasn't done much since he got his huge contract, right? And Rodgers hasn't won squat since he received his huge contract.

And now that Flacco got paid, the Ravens just had a good portion of their talent raided by other teams.

Same thing is going to happen with the 49ers and Seahawks once those QBs get their huge paydays. Their stacked rosters will have to be purged to accomodate the QBs' contracts, and the team as a whole takes a step backwards.

I don't know what this says, really. Just had this thought the other day and I figured I'd express it, to see where you guys take the idea.

I was talking to my friend about this exact thing the other day.

Is it logical to think that at some point their going to cap max salaries?

I don't know why they'd need to. Do you?

Offering $30 million/year may net you Joe Flacco, should he have hit the market this offseason.

But it gives you a competitive disadvantage with the remaining 21 starters.

There's no need to cap max salaries. The demands of fielding a competent football team will cap how high salaries can go.

So basically you're saying that teams will just stop offering more and QBs in the future will have to take lesser contracts because it will be impossible to field a competitive team.

It'll be funny if Kaepernick wins the SB for the 49ers during his contract year.....and the 49ers don't re-sign him because he wants to much.

And I understand that Manning is the exception right now, but for almost his entire career, he's actually demonstrated this rule out in Indianapolis, rather than defied it.

Only in Denver does he now defy it, and it's only because his best offensive pieces are on their rookie salaries (although this is changing, soon, with Ryan Clady) and their best defensive piece is on his rookie salary, and they just lost Dumervil because they couldn't afford him anymore, either.

Thought they lost Dumervil because they couldn't fax the papers in time because they are reeruned.

I'm just saying the trajectory of elite QB contracts can't continue forever.

At some point, you reach a competitive disadvantage with your other 21 players that is so great that the QB becomes a liability through his contract.

I don't pretend to know how teams will react to this. I'm guessing they keep paying their stud QBs more, because that's what puts asses in the seats.

But eventually, you're going to reach diminishing returns.

They got to that point because they couldn't afford Dumervil anymore and hope to be competitive with Manning's contract on board.

I don't know what this all means. I'm just putting it out there.

I think it's interesting.

Why not divide the cap 60/40 between Offense/Defense?
That would get the QB contracts under control in a hurry.

Lotta good it did him.

They have more holes now than when he signed that deal.

Which demonstrates my point.

To keep the team competitive with the other elite teams in the AFC, Brady had to take a pay cut.

So the Patriots are legitimately getting more value out of Brady than they have to pay.

I think that's how you have to do it in the NFL, now.

If you offer a QB a contract so good it truly befits his talents, you're going to struggle to do more than simply make the playoffs year in and year out. You're going to need consistent, outstanding drafting, and/or hope your QB is so charismatic (Manning, Brady) that players will take contracts much smaller than they are valued to simply play with them.

Manning signed a $98 million contract in March 2004, the season after he shared the league's MVP award with Steve McNair.

Out of how many tries.

My point is that rewarding elite QBs with elite contracts could ostensibly make Super Bowl success harder someday (if not today, already), not impossible.
