I was talking to my friend about this exact thing the other day.
Is it logical to think that at some point their going to cap max salaries? |

Offering $30 million/year may net you Joe Flacco, should he have hit the market this offseason. But it gives you a competitive disadvantage with the remaining 21 starters. There's no need to cap max salaries. The demands of fielding a competent football team will cap how high salaries can go. |

It'll be funny if Kaepernick wins the SB for the 49ers during his contract year.....and the 49ers don't re-sign him because he wants to much. |

And I understand that Manning is the exception right now, but for almost his entire career, he's actually demonstrated this rule out in Indianapolis, rather than defied it.
Only in Denver does he now defy it, and it's only because his best offensive pieces are on their rookie salaries (although this is changing, soon, with Ryan Clady) and their best defensive piece is on his rookie salary, and they just lost Dumervil because they couldn't afford him anymore, either. |

At some point, you reach a competitive disadvantage with your other 21 players that is so great that the QB becomes a liability through his contract. I don't pretend to know how teams will react to this. I'm guessing they keep paying their stud QBs more, because that's what puts asses in the seats. But eventually, you're going to reach diminishing returns. |

I don't know what this all means. I'm just putting it out there. I think it's interesting. |

Why not divide the cap 60/40 between Offense/Defense?
That would get the QB contracts under control in a hurry. |

To keep the team competitive with the other elite teams in the AFC, Brady had to take a pay cut. So the Patriots are legitimately getting more value out of Brady than they have to pay. I think that's how you have to do it in the NFL, now. If you offer a QB a contract so good it truly befits his talents, you're going to struggle to do more than simply make the playoffs year in and year out. You're going to need consistent, outstanding drafting, and/or hope your QB is so charismatic (Manning, Brady) that players will take contracts much smaller than they are valued to simply play with them. |

I believing Manning got paid before the Colts won a SB.
