*.* 2013 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2013! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

**From the 2012 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

Had a guy at the gym tell me I was looking huge. He said it was probably because of "all the crazy shit you do in the gym."

You mean like squats, deads, bench and military press? And the fact I haven't touched a cable machine or cable station in years? What a novel concept...free weights and going heavy.

Another guy asked my if my sumo deads I was doing worked my back or shoulders?

Technique looks fine. I wouldn't change a thing. Are you controlling your breathing? Would you share the name of your trainer?

That's funny as shit that you can actually see the method to his madness. He was trying to do an alternating lunge combed with an ab pullover. A for creativity, but F effectiveness

If this is your normal situation, you should probably do without the protein powder.

Why do people make this conclusion?

I can pay $.50 and get 25 grams of protein with a scoop of protein.

What else can you eat for $.50 that provides 25 grams of protein? Not even chicken comes out to that ratio.

If you do, I'd run about half speed and work on getting your stride out there but not putting a lot of power.

Then when you do start again, I'd run into your start, don't start from a stop.

Be the hell careful. Mine felt pretty good but was shit. It took me forever to get over it. Maybe yours wasn't as severe, but just be careful.
Yep, you were right.

Just re-pulled that sucker the other night attempting to get back at it too soon. It hurt 10x worse this time.

How much are kettlebells? I wouldn't mind having a 20 lb and a 35 lb at home.

It's the shipping that kills you if you order them online. You might try a Play It Again sports. They often have the lower weight ones pretty cheap.

Excellent. I'll have to check them out this evening. Not sure why, but they didn't even cross my mind. I've always gone there for softball stuff.

If you do want to order "high quality" kettlebells, though, I like Punch, Dragondoor, or StrongFirst.

That wasn't really my reasoning. If his funds are always that limited, I think he'd be better off buying real food for the nutrients and so he'll feel full. Living off of protein powder is cheap, but it's probably a bad plan long term.

Also, if you thought I was suggesting that protein is more expensive, you should have started your response with, "Bro, do you even math?" That would have been better.

I see a place that sells Troy Cast Iron. They look like the same ones that are at my gym. Are they good? What makes one brand different/better than another?

A lot of it is personal preference. I don't like any rubberizing on mine, and most high quality kettlebells don't have any. It's going to eventually break down and then your bell looks like shit. Cast iron is good. I want mine simple, unadorned and cast iron. No weird shapes or crazy colors. I also like fat grips, though a lot of women like the smaller grips, traditional kettlebells have fat grips.

So yes, the Troy ones (at least the ones that don't have the vinyl finish) look like they'd suit me just fine.
