Comp. Picks

Article by Arrowhead Pride. In it, they cite OTC as projecting KC to get a 3rd, 2 5ths, and a 7th, with a possibility of the 7th actually being a 5th as well.

Quote:
Many of you are familiar with compensatory picks in the NFL Draft each year. A team is given extra draft pick(s) depending on the number of free agents they lost in the previous year.

The Kansas City Chiefs last year lost a number of free agents, including Branden Albert, Jon Asamoah, Tyson Jackson and Geoff Schwartz. They didn't sign many qualifying free agents. Therefore, they are likely to receive some good compensatory picks, which are awarded between the third and seventh round.

Over The Cap projects the Chiefs will end up with four compensatory picks: third round pick, two fifth round picks and a seventh round pick.

The formula used for compensatory picks is not publicly known but it basically goes like this: Teams that lose more qualifying free agents than they sign are eligible for compensatory picks.

Chiefs 2014 free agents (via Over The Cap)
Lost (8): Branden Albert, Tyson Jackson, Jon Asamoah, Geoff Schwartz, Dexter McCluster, Quintin Demps, Akeem Jordan, Kendrick Lewis
Gained (4): Vance Walker, Joe Mays, Jeff Linkenbach, Christopher Owens

There are other factors at play, such as the size of the contract and the playing time for the free agent in question.

Since the formula is not publicly known, these are just projections. Over The Cap writes at the bottom of this piece that the Chiefs could see three fifth round picks instead of two fifth round picks and a seventh depending on how Schwartz is viewed.

It's beginning to look like a fun 2015 NFL Draft for the Chiefs.
From OTC:
Quote:
If Geoff Schwartz is valued as a 5th instead of a 6th, Kansas City will receive a 5th for him instead of a 7th for Quintin Demps.
Comp. picks are typically awarded the 2nd or 3rd week of March.

Chiefnj2 is right...They were NOT the same level of prospects. People ran away from Baldwin based on a terrible senior season and his own coach's advice. Benjamin was a super productive BIG receiver that was the best receiving weapon on the national championship team. Not even close.

They were pretty similar prospects. Both young and incredibly raw, both huge, pretty fast, neither guy caught much more than deep jump balls, both were inconsistent and had issues with drops. both guys were poor route runners. etc.

Just read something about demarco murry and the ravens, but comment was made that doesn't fit the profile of ozzie's comp pick formula for bundle of sticksency.

Think we all see similar strategy from ted thompson and now johh dorsey, picking the FAs very carefully, if possible, to avoid the expired contract FAs that will negate comp pick awards. This very well may remove teh randall cobb, jeremy maclin types from our target list.

Which would only matter if we lost Hudson or Houston this offseason. Signing people this offseason doesn't affect the comp picks from last offseason.

Wonder if that has anything to do with Lamar Hunt and the AFL He may have pissed some old timers off merging the two way back when.

The combine is in early February.

The league year begins on March 10th, so the league views the awarding of picks as a matter of the 2015 year and not the 2014 year.

Yet the coin flip to tiebreak the draft order is the weekend of the combine..

Any chance Branden Albert being injured last season ****s it up for us and we don't get the pick in the 3rd?

It's about contract money.

I don't think that's the only thing. I was under the assumption playing time and performance were possible factors.
