Sources: Skins offer '08 first-rounder, '09 pick for Johnson; Cincy says no

How serious are the Cincinnati Bengals about not giving in to Chad Johnson's trade demands?

Serious enough to swat away an offer from the Washington Redskins that could have netted the Bengals two first-round draft picks, team and league sources said.

The Redskins offered its first-round pick, No. 21 overall, and a conditional third-rounder in 2009 that could escalate to a first rounder if Johnson and the Redskins hit certain performance levels, the sources said.

It was not the first time the Redskins approached the Bengals about a deal, but it was the first significant proposal.

The Bengals have not only rejected the Redskins, but two other NFC East suitors -- the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles -- have been informed that there has been no change in the team's position that Johnson will not be traded.

The Bengals have noted to those suitors that Johnson has been the "second-highest paid receiver" in the NFL during the past three years, indignant about suggestions that Johnson also wants a new contract, the sources said.

Trading Johnson also would mean Cincinnati would take an $8 million salary-cap hit, but that amount could be split over the next two years. Additionally, as one owner who wished to remain anonymous told ESPN.com, "There's nothing wrong with dead money. It's cash already paid and it's cash back in your pocket that you don't have to spend, especially with the [high] amount of everyone's salary cap these days."

That to me was the most interesting part of this story. I think it's at least a minor admission from an insider that the NFL salary cap may have become too high. I'm already afraid it's too high for the Chiefs.

It is. Lets face it, the whole salary cap and draft system is broken in the NFL. The cap is so high that no team is going to exceed it right now. I'd never thought I'd see the day when the NBA did it better, but the NFL needs to fix this shit. They need implement a rookie pay scale for starts...

You'd think with the NFL players union being the weakest union in all of the major sports they could do it.

I wonder what the performance clauses read like. If the clauses were improbable I would also reject the offer as I wouldn't trade away Chad Johnson for a 1st and a future 3rd. On the flip side, if the clauses were likely to be met I would have to consider the trade more seriously.

Enh... maybe they're trying to see if a pick higher than #21 this year comes their way, and maybe the "conditional" aspect of the 2009 pick didn't interest them.

I mean... some of you want 2 R1 picks for Allen... I'd give up 2 for Ocho before I did for Allen. So, maybe they want WAS to comeback without the "conditional" term and just give them 2 R1 picks.

You can't be serious. Stud DE's are more valuable than stud WR's and they're harder to come by. JA ranks higher on the list of top DE's than 85 does on the list of WRs and he's 4 years younger. WRs are only as effective as the QB who gets them the ball. A dominant DE can take over a game all by himself.

Exactly- if you can get this for Chad, then you should def. get more for the top DE in the league- which is a top 3 premium position in the league.

Truth is, with the rate that 1st round salaries are going up, their value vs proven vets had dropped b/c teams don't see nearly the cap relief they used to and the risk of missing on picks has pushed the value of top players draft compensation. Not to mention All Pros at highly coveted positions just entering their prime.
