2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

He took Melville! Several of us in the draft thread we're asking for him. So, nope. Myers!!! Again, covered and nope.
I can't answer your question. Many of his picks aren't major leaguers yet... which probably says something in itself after 5 years. I just don't want you to pop a blood vessel in your brain and fall over dead.

How long ago/who drafted Moose, Hosmer and Perez? I honestly don't know.

Perez is probably the best answer. LA signing who seems to have huge star potential. Changing to Moose at the 11th hour is also pretty solid.

But we're probably going to have our shit handed to us tonight by a pitcher we switched off of at the 11th hour.

I thought those guys were post Baird picks. I tend to forget about a draft class a year or so after a draft, until they come up. So you see? There've been a couple. I know, I know... not enough. You know as well as anyone that picking the right pitchers in the draft of most often a crapshoot.

There's no such thing as a pitching prospect. /DeezNutz

Sale was in the ML the same year he was drafted, so he wore that "prospect" label for about a minute.

But, hey, DM isn't paid to be smarter than a douche like me on the intrawebz, so it's cool.

Look, I realize that I'm pissed right now, but I'm pissed primarily because the Royals, once again, look like a bush-league operation. Of course they're losing; that's all they know, but it's another thing to look like a circus.

I understand. BELIEVE ME I understand. Just trying to talk you down a little heh.

The Royals have done a LOT wrong over the years. Losing Mijares for nothing isn't near the top of the dung pile. Hey we cut bait with Yuni too... it's a good week right?!

One team claimed him, for nothing. Certainly possible another team could've claimed him, but it also doesn't mean teams would've lined up to trade prospects for the guy either. I guess maybe I'm giving DM a bit of leeway here because he's never really shied away from trading relievers, and good relievers, for prospects. The Braves always treated relievers as recycled trading chips, and we've been no different.

Either way, it's a bit shocking that any left handed pitcher with solid numbers this year would slip past 12-13 teams all fighting for a wild card spot... for nothing. Complaining about this is taking your eye off the ball... the question is why they cut the guy to begin with. It's fairly obvious his value was not that high. And more importantly, my point was that Rany was wrong... there's no way DM could negotiate with 29 teams when most of them just passed on the guy for nothing. It's right there, clear as day to the world, and not even debatable.

It's understandable. Royals fans have a lot of straws piled up waiting to break the camels back.

I don't understand how cutting bait with Yuni and Mijares makes them look like a bush-league operation. Sure signing Yuni was, but clearing him off the roster is no big deal. Further, the cash they allocate to him didn't come out of OUR pockets, even if it was a waste of a scarce resource. They got a ton of good productivity out of Mijares and now just need room on the forty man roster.

Dayton Moore is ridiculous at identifying hitting talent. I mean, you are talking about the guy who brought Andrus, Escobar and Perez into the league and chose Hosmer, Moose and got the green-light to sign Myers and Starling (who is hitting really well since the Royals retooled his swing.)

He also consistently acquires good value in free agency and flips it into prospects.

Our pitching development shows a systemic weakness, IMO. It has failed to develop five or six extremely talented starting pitchers starting at AA. So what DM needed to do is hire someone who can fix that, and maybe he has in Rick Knapp, but it will take time for him to implement his system and show results in pitching development.

Listening to Yost it sounded like, Mijares and Yuni are too worried about their playing time and contracts rather than turning the losing culture within the organization around. Make examples of them. I like it. At least you're getting something positive out of worthless players.

I'm not saying Moore is perfect - far from it. But I do believe he can build a champion here if he gets some help acquiring/developing starting pitching and gets over Frenchy. And I also think his ability to identify hitting prospects is irreplaceable, and was it not you who stated that all other things equal, you take hitting prospects due to their better rate of translation?

Again, which one of those elite hitting prospects were acquired because of the astute eye of Moore? Moose and Perez would be your best evidence for such a case.

This aside, anyone who follows the draft through various publications and web sources would have picked Myers. Hell, there were some of us begging for him in the second when he was dropping because of signability.

Same with Starling. If my dumb ass is trumpeting him long before the draft, I'm not incredibly impressed with Moore's ability to "evaluate" that talent.

Signing Yuni--for a second time no less--is embarrassing. It shows the organization embraces '75-levels of analysis. Mijares, according to the Star article, was also let go b/c of $.

If the Giants were willing to put in a waiver claim, I have a hard time believing that they wouldn't have traded something, anything, before the deadline. This much seems pretty obvious.

But let's fire a first base coach. Can't have anyone questioning The Process, and let's make sure that Frenchy is in the lineup--since DM's eye for hitting talent must extend here, too--and let's keep losing.

Can't wait to hear how '16 is really the year.

The Royals will never win shit under DM's tenure. He's a terrible, terrible GM. While I appreciate the thoughtfulness in your post, I disagree with it almost entirely.
