Went to a locally owned bookstore today.

We've got one in town called BookMarx. Heh.

Needless to say, it has a small political section but the politics of it is very non-mainstream. It's got a lot of Ayn Rand and Leninist stuff and almost nothing you'd consider remotely mainstream.

I forget the name of the book I ended up reading a couple chapters out of, something called "Dispelling Myths of American Slavery."

The book is an apologia of American slavery. It is insane. Claiming that American slaves had it much better than history books and pop culture tell us, claiming that slavery was often a benevolent institution, claiming that slaves could often thrive within their imprisonment and complete lack of legal protection.

Anyway, after perusing a good chunk of this book, I feel the need to stress something, because this forum never ceases to outdo my lowered expectations:

American slavery was incontrovertibly, inexcusably terrible. There was nothing redeemable about it. It did not make America better in any way. It was an overtly racist practice. And it caused unspeakable suffering to millions of innocent people.

I'm sure 95% of us agree on that.

The problem is 100% of us don't agree on it. After reading that book I grew concerned that more of my fellow Americans tolerate the idea of slavery than I'm comfortable admitting.

Have a good one.

You? I don't know. Was having slaves good for the slave owner? Of course it was. And murdering their labor pool and property wasn't good for business, so that didn't happen very often.

It's also not murder if you're legally allowed to kill them.

Murdering my means of production is always the route I choose to be more profitable.

1. I never said that.

2. You're pretty much assuming I was talking about blocking DC. Which, obviously, I wasn't.

It happened, and could happen at any time, with zero legal consequence.

Slavery is only "good" for anyone if your sole measurement for good and bad is economic benefit.

Its not even good for economic benefit in industrialized societies. You get really rich selling to the masses and well if the majority of your population doesn't earn wages then you can't sell to the masses.

If you look at the history of the richest person in America for every year pre-emancipation, you almost never see someone whose main business involves slave worked cash crops.

...this is just another thinly veiled thread by Defleck, albeit lazy, to maintain the bulleyes on "white" people's back.

Never mind that blacks fought for the south, or that blacks owned slaves and sued to keep them...or that there are confederate monuments to black soldiers.

Never mind that they fought in the Revolution, and received military pensions.

Never mind that they have found success in every phase of our society.

No, defleck would rather pimp them out for his own selfish benefit.

And we have slaves in the USofA, not many, but some? Where?

Only American slavery was "incontrovertibly, inexcusably terrible?" Not slaves held by African Chieftans, Muslim slavers, or white-on-white slavery in the ancient world or in Angle-Saxon England?

All the main races have been slaves at some point in history and the main races had slaves and it was practiced in many other countries. It is always wrong no matter the country or race. It was an economic practice based on greed.

It ended in America. Over and done with. Quit living in the past and move on. The statute of limitations has passed. You have nothing else to run your campaigns on, so you revert to the past which is regressive. Get some new ideas that affect people today if your ideas are going to be worthwhile. Otherwise, you're just showing the bankruptcy of ideas from your own side.

And stop advocating your own brand of slavery to the state where everyone has to live on the plantation.
