*.* 2014 General Fitness Thread *.*

Welcome to 2014! Now get your ass in top physical condition!

No one else started it so here it is!

**From the 2013 Thread**

If you want to get back into lifting, or need a new lifting routine, START HERE:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wi...inner_Programs

If you have questions about the SS programs, look here:

http://startingstrength.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ

Keep in mind that you're a novice lifter for a longer period of time than you think you are. Novice lifting can last anywhere from a few months to a year or two, depending on how hard you hit the weights and where you started.

Once you've reached the point where you don't make regular progress on the SS program, you are ready to move on to the intermediate stage, which can last you for a good number of years. Find it HERE:

http://madcow.hostzi.com/5x5_Program/Linear_5x5.htm

If you're a very advanced lifter (many, many years of CONSISTENT weight training), then there are lot of programs out there, and which one you pick is simply a matter of preference. If you're really that advanced, you should know what works for you and what doesn't by this point.

I was a 300-pound fatass with not a single clue about working out when I started. The first thing I did was get on a Smith machine and do some pulldowns, if memory serves. I never came close to hurting myself.

You can never be too careful when you're squatting 135.

Right? Of course, I don't use the Smith Machine to do those. I hate it.

A lot of times the un-racked bar on the Smith machine weighs 15 pounds or so. That might not even be 135.

Is anyone here into cycling? I'm a runner but have hurt my foot a couple times and its turning into a nagging injury. So I'm thinking of cross training alternatives. The only serious biking I've done is mountain biking, but there are no real trails around here and for cross training, road riding would be better I think. I was thinking about getting a cyclocross bike. From what I can see they're basically a road bike with some frame differences (like stiffness) and slightly off-road-worthy tires. Does anyone here have experience with them?

I do a lot of biking. I had a cyclocross bike for a couple of years. They are a lot of fun. You can take it pretty much anywhere. You can also swap out the tires if you want to ride more on the road. They are awesome.
