Chiefs' Sutton looking for defense to elevate its game

Quote:
Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton was asked about the play of Anthony Hitchens and Reggie Ragland on Thursday October 18, 2018, and instead of singling out the two players, said that everyone has to elevate their game.

Renowned professional writer doesn’t notice that Speaks sack wouldn’t have mattered due to the penalty.

It's just coachspeak. They could be planning to gut the defense in the offseason because they know almost everyone is terrible, but he's never going to say that. Coaches are always just going to make non-statements like "need to elevate our game" "I need to do a better job" "happy with our guys" "we'll get it fixed" "we're on to Cincinnati" and other such BS. People read too much into these comments.

Given this a lot of thought the past two years. I think Sutton is attempting to run an obsolete defense at its core. It has Ryan roots. I think its obsolete because offensive players and strategies have changed, in addition to rules. The players are too fast for this scheme now, and its too hard to find defensive players that can force this thing to work. Sub-packaging isn't enough. I never like to blame failure on scheme alone, BUT, we all remember the Greg Robinson days. The fact was that Robinson's defenses over the years were either really great or incredibly bad, there was no middle ground. Vermeil's stubbornness cost us a Super Bowl in my view by hanging with Greg a year too long. I think Sutton has found himself in a similar situation. That said, the tape reveals 3 noticeable things...Hitchens and Ragland are just not cutting it in this scheme. Parker is too slow, and we aren't getting what we COULD get from Jones.

Beyond that...I don't think Houston is worth the money at that position - he just misses too much time. Berry isn't worth the trouble either at this point, money too, although if he played he disguises a lot of problems. I've been a bit disappointed in Fuller (missed tackles). I'd rather see Speaks take Bailey's spot next year and see how it goes. Not sure he can, and not confident he'll lose weight either. I expect Nelson to be gone next year. So obviously more change is coming. The biggest mystery is where is Dorian ODaniel and exactly why isn't he on the field. My best guess...they are prepping him for late in the season so nobody has any tape on what they are going to do. It could be magic in a bottle that takes a good deal of practice to set up. If that's the case, I love it as long as we keep winning as they get him ready. I just don't believe his ability is what is keeping him on the bench.

When you have an offense like ours, you just need the defense to not give up cheap easy TDs and most importantly, create turnovers. It puts tremendous pressure on the other offense to keep up or catch up and of course that leads to, more turnovers. Go for strips, go for picks, etc. Basically, I'd probably play zone and have them jump the ball often. I don't know what else you do with this group besides that.

Pretty much what Sutton is doing. Play umbrella coverage most of the time and try to slow the other team down as much as possible. Make them run 10 or 12 or more plays to score, increasing the chance the QB will overthrow someone on third down or the offense will make an unforced error. If we give up a big play and they score, well, that'd have happened anyway if he were playing an aggressive scheme.

Bucs have the worst defense in the league? Fire their DC.
Cardinals have the worst offense in the league? Fire their OC.
Chiefs defense sucks? But hey....we're 5-1!!!

The problems with making the opposing O use 10-12 plays to score are twofold. First, it makes your D stay on the field too long and secondly, keeps your O off the field. Instead of playing it that way, why don't we just force some 3-and-outs.

And make who the DC?

Andy’s kid?
That mongoloid ILB’s coach?
90 year old Emmit Thomas?
Al Harris?

The scheme isn’t ****ing changing. They don’t have time to implement a ton of new shit in season.

Whether Sutton leaves or not, it’s rhe same goddamn defense the rest of the season.

I give literally zero ****s. It's about sending a message that this shit isn't acceptable.

Absolutely force 3 and outs if you can, we just seem to not have that ability. A combination of staff and scheme. Basically we need to hope the other team screws up.
