Alex Smith on the 2007 Patriots

So, just to carry this debate out to its logical conclusion -

The 2007 Pats went 16-0. The team was by any measure completely loaded. Randy Moss was torching defenses, Wes Welker was still in his prime, they had the league's #1 offense and #4 defense in points and yards. One of the five greatest head coaches of all time. Of course, they didn't win the Super Bowl, but this was probably the most loaded team in recent memory for a franchise that's won 5 super bowls this century.

If you change nothing but put Alex Smith on that team - same personnel, same head coach, Alex Smith is the quarterback - could that team win a Super Bowl? Would that team be a contender?

If Brady couldn't do it why the hell would Alex be able to?

As far as "contender", more than likely but some people have a loose definition of that word.

The point is, could he contend on ANY team. Such as probably the best team of this era of football.

Tom Brady threw what....50 Td?

5000 yards?

Won 16 games?

A better question is could smith have won 11 games with the pats in 2010 or whenever Brady went down

Yeah, that's a good data point too.

Smith certainly would have outperformed Cassel, and Cassel won 11 games that year.
