Widmark, to me, was a guy who I never thought "He's in that movie, so I want to see that".

He was more the guy who, after I watched the movie, I came away thinking, he was really good.

I guess the last movie I saw RW in was 'Coma', it came out around 1978. Richard played the crazy hospital administrator that was harvesting body parts and Michael Douglas I believe was a young doctor or intern who exposed the plan. However, I seem to always remember Richard Widmark dressed as a naval officer commanding a submarine or destroyer.

Coma was incredible...and has held up well, IMO.

The movie you remember is "The Bedford Incident", another favorite of mine.
