The 49ers have expressed to others that a deal for QB Alex Smith is effectively complete. Can't be finalized til league year begins 3/12

Jason La Canfora ‏@JasonLaCanfora

so it's not official, both clubs view it at as it's effectively done. I do not know the other team. KC and JAX are 2 teams that make sense

He is the very definition of efficient game manager.

The problem is that you are going to come up against teams in the playoffs that have all of that in place, but that are led by a QB that can put his team on his shoulders and make plays to win games.

Alex Smith can not.

He doesn't suck, but he is nowhere near good enough.
the one playoff game Smith played, he won -- against Brees & the Saints.

Alex Smith threw three TD's & ran one in during that game. He made the game winning pass in a come from behind win during a fourth qtr that changed leads five times.

Is he good enough? ha. if this team can generate pass rush from the RDE position, this team is as good if not better than the one Alex Smith is leaving. The one that got within one victory of playing for the championship.

They need better. Everybody does. You can't pass up Smith just because he might not be as good as Geno in four years and there is no guarantee Geno will be better. Easy to think he will, he's got that arm and makes good decisions, etc. but this ain't college.

Alex Smith gives the Chiefs the ability to win now and you can argue he isn't good enough all you want, but it's obvious he'd make this team an instant winner with the ability to win playoffs against formidable opponents.

There's a risk with drafting any player high. If you're looking for the sure thing, you're not going to get it.

A 2nd round qb, to me, will be just as risky as taking geno there at first.
Thats a very short sited view. Many experts are not only mocking Geno in the top 10, but are saying he is worth it too now.

There is no such thing as a non risk pick. Plenty of LTs and linemen etc have been called no risk picks only to bust heavily. The difference here is while you 100% NEED a good to great quarterback, you can get away with mediocre line play. There is a great many reasons to take the risk. 30 years of non risk taking should be enough to convince you.

We have done the Joeckel pick countless times before. See Dorsey or Jackson or Ryan Sims.

MATT MILLER just said on 810 that there is NO WAY that Geno will fall out of the first round.

He was one of the guys suggesting that NO QB would go in the 1st round.

And now Barkley and Geno are LOCKS to go in the 1st.

I am leaning that way sure. Its sooo much easier this year too. Basically the minority on CP are those that dont want Geno. The Great Masses have been flaming away at the noobs. The last few pages are a great example of that. Its been fun to watch

No, concensus (Add to the CP lexicon? Maybe) means everyone agrees that a said player is the clear top player at his position, or the clear top choice. It doesn't mean "Many think he's the best, but many don't."

You will get WIDELY varying takes on who the top LT in this draft in. A lot like Joeckel, but a lot also like Eric Fisher (Who killed the Senior Bowl and was better at the combine than Joeckel) and some even like Lane Johnson the best because of his superior athletic ability and upside.

Joeckel is not, and never has been at any point in the process, the clear top pick, either.
