Life Mt Rushmore - Page 3

For the wife and I's anniversary, we are heading up to Mt Rushmore. I figured I'd leverage the knowledge of the Planet to maximize the value of the trip.

Basically, what are the best things to do up there? (Other than see the faces) Are there any must sees?

What about places to stay? Should I try to get close, or stay in Rapid City? The stuff close there is probably unbelievably expensive, no?

What about other stuff in the area?

Any must visit places to eat? I'm a pretty big fan of food. (Yes, I know NAPA can supply me with Antifreeze)

Any advice would be appreciated.

In Custer Park, sometimes you can see some awesome stuff on the wildlife loop. That's hit and miss though.

Also, Mt. Coolidge is free, and you can drive to one of the highest points in the Black Hills. You can see Rushmore and Crazy Horse from the fire station lookout. You might want to consider packing a cooler lunch while in Custer, there are plenty of nice places to pull over and take a rest. The horse rudes out of the Blue Bell Lodge aren't bad, you get back into the real woods on them.

If you're into caves I'd suggest either Jewel, or Wind, those are state run.

If you're into mountain bikes you can ride the Mickleson trail. You might have to bring your own, not sure if they are rented anywhere.

I think a lot of the rest of it is tour trap stuff.

Best burger in the hills is at Lewie's, just short of the turn to Terry Peak, just outside of Lead.

Oh yea, and you can get to the top of Terry Peak by driving up Summit road on the back side. There's a lookout up there as well.

I've done this. It is worth the price.

Also, great point about avoiding the rally. The entire area becomes a congested mess.

Also, the alpine slide has a nice little joint where you can
grab a burger or dog and a beer....Nice view overlooking Mt. Rushmore valley....

as for the black hills, you have to hit Deadwood and go through all the different casinos. Cosmos is cool, once... Rushmore has to be seen in the night... crazy horse is "ok", devils tower is pretty cool although i havent hiked or climbed it...

Wall drug is a waste of time... unless you like blowing money on stupid crap...

and i actually enjoy the Sturgis Rally time... lotta interesting things go on there... although i would NOT pick that time to hit the touristy things...

rally is usually early august... you may still see a fair amount of bikes there... but nothing even remotely close to the rally numbers..
