2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

I wouldn't consider Matt Moore a pitching prospect at this point. He's proven his abilities transfer to MLB (his post-April numbers were very good last year).

Miller is still a pitching prospect, though. It would be hard to move Myers for him straight up (But if the Cardinals are talking about the guy, that's something you can start exploring, IMO).

He's not Mike Montgomery. Even when he was struggling last year, Miller never exhibited major control issues (very average BB rate). Miller is, at this point, what it was hoped Montgomery would become (at least in AAA).

I have no desire to really trade Myers, but you have to listen to offers, and see if you get something that's too good to refuse. If you move him, you hope he's more Delmon Young than Ryan Bruan (and vice versa if you keep him).

If you HAD to trade one who would it be: Butler or Myers?

in order to get us a quality starting pitcher.

Can I write in Eric Hosmer?

Butler is a proven MLB hitter who is coming into his prime and probably gives you .300/25-30 HR/.375 OBP/.500 SLG for the next 3-4 years.

Myers' upside is igher, and he certainly helps in other ways (he should eventually be a very good RF and is not the plodder on the base paths Butler is). But it's hard to decide which answer is better.

Trade the established guy who's a legitimate MLB 3-4 hitter? Or trade the potential superstar who is 100 percent unproven?

Greinke's an exception, and good luck to the Royals if they think they're going to outbid Arte Moreno for him. They dumped Santana, Haren and Hunter to clear space for the Greinke offer and they're sitting on a cost-controlled Trout (with a well under-value Weaver as well). Not to mention an astronomical TV deal.

The Angels will obliterate any offer the Royals can make for Greinke.

It isn't as simple as "well just go sign one". There are only about 5 teams in baseball that can pull that stunt and the Royals aren't one of them.

If they want a legitimate #1 or #2 caliber starter, they're going to have to trade for one. And with their payroll restrictions (self-imposed or otherwise), they're going to have to trade for a cost-controlled one. So you're looking at guys like Moore or Rosenthal; young guys that have significant upside and some ML success.

Alternatively you could go prospect shopping and pursue someone like Miller. I don't think the O's would surrender Bundy for anything, but you have to at least make the call. The Braves would be a real nice place to look as they do have a ton of young SP, but Hudson's older, Hanson's injured and now Beachy's blown his elbow. The time to knock on those doors was last year; they may be looking at Medlen/Minor/Delgado/Teheran as less luxuries and more soon to be necessities at this point.
I agree with what you are saying. I don't think the Royals or anyone really is going to be able to compete for Greinke. I am all for a trade but I would rather trade three AAA/AA guys not named Myers for one pitcher than trade Myers for that same pitcher. Let's sign Guthrie and trade anyone but Myers and the ML talent for a pitcher.

Butler is a DH. If I have to trade one, I think I'd go with him. It'd be an unpopular move for sure and he is an excellent hitter. However, the fact that Meyers can play the field and has a potential for a big bat out weighs a big bat that can really only play DH.

That being said to part with Billy it would have to be for a #1 or really darn good #2.

I'm sure it would take Billy and some prospect to pull a #2.

That plan is fine with me, too (and probably preferred, honestly). But that means the pitcher that is acquired is going to be more of a short-term option - and probably not a true star pitcher.

You'd need to talk to teams that are in long-term building stages. It makes the Rays no longer a good matchup (unless you're dealing for a Davis or Niemann).

The Cubs would be someone to talk to, but their only real piece that would fit is Matt Garza (who has injury concerns).

So people don't have to click on the link:

Quote:
The Kansas City Royals announced today that the club has signed four additional players to minor league contracts for the 2013 season. The club plans to announce Major League Spring Training invitations at a later date.

Right-handed pitcher Anthony Ortega, 27, is currently pitching for Tiburones de La Guaira in the Venezuelan Winter League, recording a 1-1 record with a 3.00 ERA in 16 relief appearances. The 6-footer from Miranda, Venezuela, who made three starts for the Angels in 2009, is 26-31 with a 4.41 ERA in 118 career minor league games, including 82 starts. Ortega did not pitch during the 2012 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow.

34-year-old right-handed pitcher Brian Sanches returns to the Royals organization after nearly 10 with other clubs. Sanches was the Royals’ second-round selection in 1999 out of Lamar University. He pitched in the Kansas City system until August 26, 2003 when he was traded to San Diego for outfielder Rondell White. Sanches was then sent to Philadelphia in a trade on April 1, 2004. The 6-foot-1 Nederland, Texas native has made 195 career appearances, all but two in relief, in the Majors with the Phillies (2006-07, 2012), Nationals (2008) and Marlins (2009-11), recording a 13-7 record with a 3.75 ERA in 235.0 innings.

Left-handed pitcher Atahualpa Severino, 28, posted a 3-0 record with three saves and a 2.81 ERA in 46 relief stints for Syracuse, Washington’s Triple-A affiliate, in 2012. Born in Cotui, Dominican Republic, Severino saw his only Major League action in 2011 with the Nationals, recording a 1-0 record with a 3.86 ERA in six games.

Infielder Brandon Wood, 27, spent 2012 at Triple-A Colorado Springs in the Rockies organization, batting .259 with 10 home runs and 64 RBI on 119 games. The former top prospect of the Los Angeles Angels has played in 272 Major League contests since his debut with the Angels as a 22-year-old in 2007. He is a career .186 hitter with 18 home runs for the Angels (2007-11) and Pirates (2011). The 2003 first-round selection (23rd overall), who has connected for at least 20 home runs in five minor league seasons including a California League-record 43 in 2005, came up as a shortstop and third baseman, but has since appeared at first base and in the outfield.
