‘The Art of the Deal’ co-author: Trump is ‘terrifying’

The co-author of Donald Trump’s bestselling book “The Art of the Deal” says he is horrified the billionaire may win the presidency.

“It’s a terrifying thing,” writer Tony Schwartz said Monday on ABC’s “Good Morning America." "I never in a million years thought he would run for president.

“I haven’t slept a night through since Donald Trump announced for president because I believe he is so insecure, so easily provoked and particularly not nearly as smart as people might imagine he is.”
Schwartz said he has grave concerns about how Trump would handle conflicts with world leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“In the face of somebody like Putin provoking him cleverly — because Putin’s a heck of a lot smarter than Donald Trump — I do worry that with the nuclear codes he would end civilization as we know it. This is a man who has more sociopathic tendencies than any candidate in my adult life that I’ve observed.”

Schwartz added Trump, the presumptive GOP presidential nominee, lacks the focus needed for the nation’s highest office.

“He has an incredibly short attention span,” he said. "He was unable to do interviews with me past 10–15 minutes. Finally I had to sit in his office and pick up a phone eight feet away from his desk so I could listen in on his calls and turn this into a book. My two-year-old grandson has a longer attention span than Donald Trump."

ABC News adds:

Tony Schwartz, Donald Trump’s co-author on “The Art of the Deal,” admitted that he regrets writing the 1987 book and that he finds the thought of a Trump presidency “terrifying.”

So why did Schwartz keep his silence for so long?

“We had a successful experience together. I never in a million years thought he would run for president. Had I thought that 30 years ago, I wouldn’t have written the book,” he told George Stephanopoulos on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” today. “But for 29 years, I didn’t think he would, and it didn’t seem like it was important to speak out. I now feel it’s my civic duty.”

Schwartz first spoke out about Trump in an interview with The New Yorker published today, in which he said he spent 18 months getting to know Trump in 1985. He described what it was like to write the book with the businessman and how he thinks he would do as president of the United States.

“I put lipstick on a pig,” Schwartz told the magazine. “I feel a deep sense of remorse that I contributed to presenting Trump in a way that brought him wider attention and made him more appealing than he is.”

He added, “I genuinely believe that if Trump wins and gets the nuclear codes, there is an excellent possibility it will lead to the end of civilization.” {been saying this all along}

I think Trump identified as a liberal back then, too? Hard to keep track, honestly.

I knew someone would dig it up somewhere. I'm sure the man liked his fat paycheck for writing it. Hypocrite.

Right on cue.

I'm curious why you call him a hypocrite, though.

There was a long article on this recently, which I assume ABC picked up on.

http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/20...iter-tells-all

Schwartz said that if he had a chance to rename the title of the book, it would be "The Sociopath"

Which of course is just another opinion.

Who attacks Trump tells you a lot about how scared the left is. Especially when HitLiaRy is the real sociopath — congenital liar and serial criminal with no conscience.

The left hates successful businessmen. They did the same to Mittens. They're commies—like Dave Lane. Supporting the "Looter Ticket!"

I don't know if he is a sociopath because you need to spend a lot of time 1 on 1 with someone before you can tell, and even then it can be difficult. Schwartz spent a tremendous amount of time with Trump, so he would know whether Trump has any sense of empathy more than we would.

I am confident in saying Trump is a severe narcissist, you only need to review his years of public speaking to see that.

You are supporting someone who is, literally, no hyperbole, a misogynist authoritarian who would likely try to abuse the power of the presidency and has little to no respect for the constitution. There are a lot of partisan hacks on this board who would support whoever has a R or a D next to their name no matter what, but you aren't one of those people, so I don't get why you don't see Trump for who he really is.

Probably not. We do not have enough evidence to say they are, but there's no doubt about Trump.
