And this explains why there weren't any NBA games on at the bar last Friday. You don't want to go head-to-head with the NFL draft. Or, apparently, the Kentucky Derby:

NBA Playoffs: Overnight Ratings Drop For All Five Games on ESPN
May 7, 2012 2:17 PM 1 Comment and 1 Reaction

It was a rough weekend for the NBA Playoffs on ESPN, as all five of the network’s telecast windows suffered double-digit declines compared to last year.

On Friday, Game 3 of the Lakers/Nuggets series drew a 2.6 overnight rating on ESPN, down 24% from Lakers/Hornets Game 3 in the same window a year earlier (3.4), but up 13% from Mavericks/Spurs Game 3 in 2010 (2.3).

Earlier in the night, Hawks/Celtics Game 3 drew a 2.0 overnight rating — down 29% from Celtics/Knicks Game 3 last year (2.8), but up 11% from Celtics/Heat Game 3 in 2010 (1.8).

Over on ESPN2, Bulls/Sixers Game 3 drew a 0.9 overnight, down a tick from Magic/Hawks Game 3 last year (1.0), and down 18% from Nuggets/Jazz Game 3 in a later timeslot in 2010 (1.1).

Keep in mind each of the 2010 games aired opposite second and third round coverage of the NFL Draft.

On Saturday, Game 4 of the Magic/Pacers series drew a 1.6 overnight rating, down 43% from Bulls/Pacers Game 4 on TNT in the comparable window last year (2.8), but up a tick from Magic/Bobcats Game 4 on TNT in 2010 (1.5).

Later in the day, Grizzlies/Clippers Game 3 drew a 2.2 overnight, down 19% from Mavericks/Trail Blazers Game 4 on TNT last year (2.7), but up 10% from Suns/Trail Blazers Game 4 on TNT in 2010 (2.0). The game faced hefty competition from the Kentucky Derby on NBC.

Big TV numbers

South Florida not a basketball market? Think again, at least based on the overnight ratings from Sunday's Game 4 on ABC.

While Heat-Knicks recorded an 8.9 overnight rating in New York, it recorded a 17.4 rating in South Florida. That made it ABC's highest-rated first-round game ever in both markets.

Overall, the game's 5.3 national rating was up 6 percent from the comparable first-round Sunday game last year between the Knicks and Boston Celtics, becoming the highest-rated first-round game ever on ABC.

I guess the marks were highest ever for ABC's NBA playoff coverage, not the NBA playoffs.

Still a good showing to be highest rated in the New York market.

Yep. I edited.
Heat/Knicks making a decent showing in the ratings:

One of the bright spots in an otherwise slow postseason, the short-lived Heat/Knicks series concluded with another increase in viewership Wednesday night.

Game 5 of the Knicks/Heat first round NBA playoff series drew 4.102 million viewers on TNT, up 13% from Sixers/Heat Game 5 last year (3.623M), and up 43% from Bucks/Hawks Game 5 in 2010 (2.538M).

Of the 31* NBA playoff games on ABC, TNT, ESPN and ESPN2 this year, Wednesday’s Game 5 was just the ninth to have an increase in viewership compared to last year. Four of the nine increases were for Heat/Knicks games.

Later Wednesday night, Game 5 between the Clippers and Grizzlies drew 4.016 million viewers — down 6% from Nuggets/Thunder Game 5 last year (4.266M), but up 39% from Jazz/Nuggets Game 5 in 2010 (3.060M).

Despite the modest decline, the game ranks as the most-viewed playoff telecast this year to not involve the Heat, Thunder or Lakers.

* Does not include Sunday’s Bulls/Sixers Game 4 and Heat/Knicks Game 4 on ABC, as final viewership for those games was not immediately available.

Lakers are playing with Zero heart except for Kobe. I doubt they would have looked this bad under Jackson.

Oh, they did look this bad under Phil.

There were several series a while back where the Lakers got taken to game 7's by teams that they were superior against.

Do people still think the Lakers trading for Chris Paul would have been a bad trade?

The return for the Hornets would have been a far greater one than they received.
