Camera Suggestions?
Ok;

so the wife and I are in the market for a camera. We previously had a Sony digital camera for about 10 years but the wife dropped it and now it won't hold any settings etc.

So, it's time for another one. I'm by no means a professional photographer; but I also don't want some little $100 POS either. I'd like to have one that I could 'grow' into if I wanted to so to speak.

I think My budget is about $400-$600. I was looking at the Nikon D3200 DSLR....though, admittedly, I'm not 100% what "DSLR" is.
I like the design of it; I've held a few like it and they're much easier to hold IMO.

Suggestions?

Somewhat confused by the price differential between the 5D line and the 6D... compared to the 5Dii, the 6D seems to be better in pretty much every way except MP. Is the 6D a plastic casing, and the 5D magnesium alloy?

I'm thoroughly confused by this. Looks like the 5Dii does video significantly better, but the 6D appears to be superior in almost every way. Both are magnesium alloy bodies, and build quality appears to be about the same. I cannot for the life of me figure out why the 5D line is so much more expensive.

I feel like I'm missing something obvious... I need to deep dive into these two reviews later:

Ask yourself do you want some huge clunky ****er and a bag full of lenses…or do you want to take a picture?

Im always amazed at the photo snobs who lunk a ton of shit to Europe so they can take a cool picture of a stray cat in Italy and post the cool facts of body/lens/ speed/ aperture etc

Then you see same cat pic taken by a Nikon point and shoot….

Spend the money on a better trip.

I have to go on business. The wife's coming along. Tough to beat 9 days in Hawaii for me spending 9 hours for three days working and only having to pay for my wife's plane ticket.

That's actually a great point. Yes, I have the 20D and a TON of heavy shit to lug around, but I use it when the time is right. it's a hobby and I've been shooting my whole life, so it's awesome. But I/we have a Canon 750 (with housing) for scuba and pocket carrying, and an Olympus C-5050 for that mid-level shooting, and lord knows I use my phone's camera shit-ton.

So your point is valid, but those bulky cameras are SUPER-AWESOME too.

I fully agree. But last summer in Italy at 100 degrees it was awesome to have my nikon point and shoot while some dickweed like Dave Lane had a 20 pound camera pack and was broke ass enough to take pictures of people having a wine or beer in the afternoon rather than having one cause he dropped a couple grand on cameras before he left home.

And…the camera in a iPhone takes some amazing stuff. Not sure how. But yes it does.
