June 6th, 1944. These men had balls of steel. 70th anniversary.

War is hell. I don't like war. Sometimes war is necessary. And Hitler was one son of a bitch who had to be stopped. All politics aside. The 70th anniversary of this is in a couple of weeks. Let's have a good memorial of these great heroes who gave their lives, so that we could have our lives that we have now.

Wow. That is the reason textbooks from across the globe portray Hilter and the Nazi's that way? Yeah everyone in history is wrong.

D-Day's Impressive Numbers

Convoy of ships crossing the English Channel An invading army had not crossed the unpredictable, dangerous English Channel since 1688 -- and once the massive force set out, there was no turning back. The 5000-vessel armada stretched as far as the eye could see, transporting over 150,000 men and nearly 30,000 vehicles across the channel to the French beaches. Six parachute regiments -- over 13,000 men -- were flown from nine British airfields in over 800 planes. More than 300 planes dropped 13,000 bombs over coastal Normandy immediately in advance of the invasion.

War planners had projected that 5,000 tons of gasoline would be needed daily for the first 20 days after the initial assault. In one planning scenario, 3,489 long tons of soap would be required for the first four months in France.

By nightfall on June 6, more than 9,000 Allied soldiers were dead or wounded, but more than 100,000 had made it ashore, securing French coastal villages. And within weeks, supplies were being unloaded at UTAH and OMAHA beachheads at the rate of over 20,000 tons per day.

Captured Germans were sent to American prisoner of war camps at the rate of 30,000 POWs per month from D-Day until Christmas 1944. Thirty-three detention facilities were in Texas alone.

Amazing generation!

It makes sense why many of them were so eager to go. Like bowener says, Imagine growing up on a farm in Kansas broke and hungry and then getting an opportunity to get paid to go traipsing around Europe. Many of them probably had tunnel vision for the adventure and were naive enough to overlook the magnitude of what they were getting themselves into. THAT'S TAKING NOTHING AWAY FROM THEM THOUGH. Don't get me wrong.

I wonder how many Americans don't know that there were three other beach landings that day, not just Omaha and Utah.

I was fortunate enough while stationed in Italy with the 173rd Airborne (yes, I know they did not participate in the Normandy invasion, nor were they even in WWII) to jump into a drop zone at St. Mere Eglise and then tour the Normandy battlefield, to include Pointe Du Hoc. One of the top ten coolest things I did while in uniform- just a kickass experience all the way around.

Negative. No Germans. We killed many bottles of French beer and wine though.

Would add to anyone who hasn't been to put it on their bucket list; it's that worthwhile.

Heh, I know your somewhat trolling, but also somewhat right.

I'll forever be eternally grateful for what these guys did, but this current generation would be able to accomplish the same things if we were faced with a threat like that.

The WWII guys sacrificed and died so we wouldn't have to ever face that again.

But the guys who fought and died in Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait,Iraq, Afghanistan, etc should be thought of no less.

All equally brave.
