Next Gen Kindle Fire

Anyone know anything about this? I think I want.
Amazon’s New Kindle Could Come in September
By Andrei C. | Jul 17, 2012 Add a comment .Posted In Android, Games & Gadgets, Mobile Devices
Reports are that Amazon’s new Kindle Fire will be unveiled in September.

The new device is expected to come with an improved display, both in terms of resolution (1280 x 800 pixels) and PPI (216), all on the same screen size. It will also be lighter, thinner and feature a built-in camera, although it’s not clear if it’ll be front-facing or not).

All of these details come from AllThingsD.

I’m betting the new Fire will include an improved chip, maybe a Tegra 3 Quad-Core.

The New York Times says the device “could compete more directly with the iPad, according to a developer briefed on Amazon’s plans who did not want to be identified talking about unannounced products.”

Ironically, the Kindle Fire’s strongest feature isn’t within the device itself: It’s Amazon Prime membership, which for just $79 a year provides access to a huge collection of movies, TV shows and books, plus upgraded shipping.

And while the Kindle Fire has sold better than previous models, it still hasn't been as successful as Amazon hoped. To address that, they're increasing the next gen Kindle's capabilities, in hopes of making it more of an iPad competitor. They're not going to simplify it to keep it cheap, they're going the opposite direction. iPad has shown that price isn't the determining factor in choosing a tablet for the overwhelming majority.
Thanks, I see where you are coming from. I don't share your view that everyone wants their tablet to be an ipad but I understand your reasoning.

That's my favorite Android offering at the moment. The Nexus 10 is gonna be even better too. That should be one badass little tablet.

And you can run XBMC on Android tablets now too. Which makes them infinitely better as a media consumption device. It's still in development, but should be final soon, and will run without rooting. That jumps Android tablets up to iPad capable level by itself. At least least for what I use a tablet for..

XBMC for Android

Sure I do. Because I said the iPhone I own is better than the kindle fire I own or what I do based on my personal experience, I see why you'd see my massive bias.

I do like how you can find a comma on the iPhone keyboard, but my fire keyboard doesn't have one. That's a terrible bias. And despite that I love my fire...

I would agree on the software. Clunky is a good word.

I heard about it back when they announced it. Looks like a decent update for the Prime, but I'll live.

don't be offended by anything I say; it isn't meant as an attack. I'm mildly reeruned, if that helps you put me in perspective.

No doubt. If I was buying one today that's the tablet I would buy.

Do you mind sharing why? What does the Nexus 7 have over the new Kindle Fire?

Having to restart it to watch Netflix, or the level of something like burn in on the screen when I switch screens isn't. Android sucks. Whenever I open the web it restores a tab to a site I closed out of 3 months ago. Always.

Then my company switched from the Inspire4G to the iPhone. Now all I do on the kindle is read, my iPhone is better for everything else. Including watching movies on the way smaller screen.

I would get an iPad over the Fire for everything I'd do on it except read. For that, the size and backlit screen (while in bed) make the Fire perfect for me.
When I bought my Kindle I specifically picked the $99 black and white version. I want a device that just reads books, nothing more. For that I think it's great. Much lighter than the Fire and the battery lasts for weeks.

If I want to surf the web, I'll use my laptop, thank you very much.

Pretty much everything except Amazon integration. I think Google was getting fed up with the other manufacturers taking so long to get good products out there affordably and decided to just do it themselves. The key points:
  • Much better screen resolution
  • Faster hardware
  • Bluetooth
  • Camera
  • GPS
  • Thinner and lighter
  • Jellybean

What he said. Amazon integration isn't of much use to me since I rooted my Fire and turned into into a regular Android tablet.

Has that worked pretty well? My wife has expressed some frustration with hers from time to time, so I've debated it. If so, got a ROM you recommend?

Thank you. Amazon integration is why I'd get a tablet but those are some key differences. Wonder if the next gen Fire will come with JellyBean? Or if they will be pushing JB out to the current Fire in an OTA update.
