You're not going to get a 'prime year', established coach at this point in the program. You've also established a nice little reputation as a coach-killer over the last several years (I've heard both Dan Patrick and Scott VanPelt make this point lately), making you pretty far down on the list for this season's 'hot' coach.

Well the good news is that there's a new 'hot' coach every single season and most of them are fairly interchangeable. So why not bring in a guy like Fulmer or Barnett, guys that know how to win games and don't care if they are walking into potential career suicide as its likely their last job anyway?

You really don't think Fulmer could turn KU into a much MUCH better job in 3 or 4 years? You essentially bring him in as a short-term stopgap and safe rebuilder. He won't come with nearly the risks of a some of these assistants and 2nd tier head coaches you're looking at (i.e. Gill) and you're far more likely to end up improving KU as a job for the next hire. Maybe then the 'name' assistant that year gives KU a much longer look.

Given the state of the program, bringing in an older coach with a strong pedigree seems like a solid idea to me.
I don't necessarily hate that line of thinking. Not the best case scenario, but it would surely avoid us the epic dumb that was Turner Gill.

Zeke, you took the first line of DJ's quote out of context by truncating it. As for the "career suicide" comments, it is absolutely being discussed by national personalities, and I think its a very real concern for up and coming coaches.

If you're the next big thing, why would you go somewhere that just fired the last big thing after only 2 years?

Patently false.

Again - this is the national reputation of your program right now. Dan Patrick doesn't give a wet fart about MU/KU but he specifically noted that many assistants might choose to stay at their current level and wait another year rather than take the KU job. VanPelt said something similar, but he was talking about mid-level head coaches (like Dykes).

Go ahead and say its just sour grapes if you'd like, but I'd suggest you listen to the national outlets a little more before believing it. Kansas has developed a national reputation for coaching suicides.

No he didn't; I edited it before a response because I knew the KU fans and their "Well Zenger clearly didn't want that guy" rearview mirror rationalization would read it as he did.

I clarified the point to make the discussion more worthwhile; he must've clicked the quote button almost immediately.

As to the rest of his response; pretty head-in-the-sand stuff right there.

And that's with the assumption that he's been interviewed\offered the job at KU which we don't even know.

There are two possible scenarios I see playing out here and both can end up being good for KU. 1) KU lands Fedora. We know that he interviewed openly with ASU, A&M and UNC. Three good jobs. He chose KU over them (possibly, depending on if we find out he has offers). That gives me a ton of confidence in Zenger. 2) He gets a job at one of those schools, and we don't know whether KU was ever actively trying to get him. This also gives me confidence in Zenger in that he is doing what is best for the school. Not openly recruiting anyone and everyone with the hope of landing someone. He's gathering everything he can and getting the best guy in here that we can get without publicizing all the "no's" along the way.

If Zenger was out there making all these interviews and offers public, it could be bad when a few coaches say "no" and then others are looking at it with the attitude of "maybe I don't wanna coach there, heck they all are turning them down".

Either way, it's being handled correctly by our new AD and this is giving me a lot more confidence that we have the right guy making this decision.

Yes, there are many more scenarios that can play out here.. but That's my positive spin for the day.

Because a coach was fired for having a very bad relationship with his Athletic Director, his entire Athletic Department, his kids, and the community because he was a colassal dick? He started losing and no one jumped to save him because of the way he treated everyone including his own boss.

And then because the nice guy that couldn't coach a lick was fired by the new AD?

Give me a break. Face value, that's all you have.

I'm talking about the coach thinking that HE is the next big thing. Nobody is going to confuse Kansas football with the next big thing. Its more like pissing with a boner. \admits to trolling there

You can certainly cherry pick a source all you want and tout your shining armor logic. That's what Knowmo does around these parts.

I'll actually pay attention to reality.

Spin it however you want. The bottom line is that a historically terrible program won an Orange Bowl in 2007. 4 years later, they are looking for their third coach with the last two having had their careers destroyed despite being recently considered rising stars.
