WASHINGTON - A person familiar with the situation says the surgery on Robert Griffin III’s knee revealed damage to the ACL.
The Washington Redskins quarterback had surgery Wednesday morning to repair a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. The procedure also examined Griffin’s ACL, which he tore while playing for Baylor in 2009. Another torn ACL would complicate Griffin’s chances of returning by the start of next season.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Redskins had not made an announcement about the latest details surrounding the rookie quarterback’s injury.
Griffin sprained the LCL last month and reinjured the knee in Sunday’s playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Everyone knows running quarterbacks are a disaster waiting to happen. There's a reason that NFL running backs usually have a short career.

As for pulling RG3 from the game, everyone watching that game could tell how ineffective he was, and that not only was he putting his health at risk but the Skins probably had a better chance of winning with the backup at that point.

What's really funny is that when Cutler pulled himself from a game, everyone jumped on the guy and called him a pussy. But this incident makes it clear that, if you can't play, you shouldn't play.

Yep, it wasnt only hobbling his ability to run, he obviously couldnt step into his passes at all and it was causing him to be unusually inaccurate.

And now everyone especially Shanny is doing the CYA thing throwing the Dr. under the bus which is not cool. I don't believe RGIII was being selfish at all as jettio said. If anyone was being selfish it was Shanny who should have stepped in and pulled him not just to have a healthier QB out there to have a better chance to win BUT to protect the franchise. But he couldn't resist and let him stay in thus exposing Shanny's real feelings that in his mind a 65-75% functioning RGIII is better than a 100% Cousins even though Cousins had played well when called upon which makes Shanny look even worse and to be 2nd guessed.

Understand this kid was raised in a military family with much discipline, competitive as hell and knows he is the leader who must lead and those 3 elements automatically kicked in for him. I don't blame him one iota for this. I believe Shanny did recognize that he was injured but winning was all that mattered and rather than step in and pull him to protect not only him but the franchise, Shanny took advantage of the rookie QB's naivete' about playing injured as opposed to playing hurt. He got greedy and hoped RGIII could pull it off like he had done all year. I guarantee you this will be one of those NFL Films documented moments down the road about Shannahan's career and he will end up confessing that he should have pulled him.

If a four hundred pound baltimore lineman were to piledrive into newtons kneecap while he was scrambling he'd have lacerated ligaments too. All humans have knee ligaments.

It'll be tough to come back. I'll be surprised if he plays next season. He needs to take this time to learn to read defenses and become more of a pocket passer.

This has ominous signs of another 'could have been great' guys career cut short. IF he can come back from multiple ACLs and an LCL, both himself and his playcallers need to be wary of injury at all times. That means no more stupid bootlegs. And jesus christ man, when you see a linebacker with QB bloodlust lock eyes on you..

bah, I had the same procedure, Contralateral Patellar Graft... took part of the patella tendon(and some bone from both sides) from the good leg and used it for the graft. You rehab both legs, build strength in the graft leg and and confidence in the ACLr leg. RG III has already done it once, the rehab should be no problem(and quicker because you aren't totally f--king up and already f--ked up leg by taking part of it's patella tendon or some hamstring tendons).

Griffin’s knee creates more concern than advertised

And now we know why Dr. James Andrews is pumping the brakes regarding the presumption that Robert Griffin III will become Adrian Peterson II.

Per a league source, there is much greater concern regarding Griffin’s knee than anyone connected to the Redskins or Griffin has publicly conceded.

Yes, he tore his LCL and his ACL. Yes, it won’t be easy to rehab both ligaments at the same time. Yes, they had to invade his healthy knee for a patellar tendon graft. And, yes, Griffin suffered a partial tear of his meniscus when tearing the ACL, a common consequence when the ACL is damaged.

All of those pieces of information have made their way to the media. But the entire result is a stew of concerns that has created a far more negative vibe in and around the Griffin camp than the pronouncements of optimism and quasi-guarantees that he’ll be good as new by September 2013.

Apart from the fact that there’s no way to know how the ACL will rehab, the biggest concern, as the source explained it, is the damage to Griffin’s cartilage. With the ACL in the right knee now torn twice in less than four years, Griffin has lost enough cartilage in his knee to raise concerns about how much remains and how long it will last. Eventually, Griffin could be dealing with bone-on-bone contact, and the chronic pain that goes along with it.

And he’s still only 22.

The first ACL tear was long forgotten during Griffin’s stellar rookie season. In fact, most fans didn’t even know about it, because Griffin was hardly a nationally-known name at the time the injury happened. But there was a real physical risk when the Redskins gave up three first-round picks and a second-round pick to get Griffin, and less than a year after making the trade the team now has to wonder whether Griffin ever will be the same — and if he is how long that will possibly last.
