Miami's Martin leaves team after 'emotional breakdown'

Jonathan Martin leaves Dolphins after 'breakdown'

By Dan Hanzus

An unusual situation is unfolding in Miami, where Dolphins right tackle Jonathan Martin has left the team after suffering an "emotional breakdown" this week.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Wednesday that Martin is currently seeking help with his family after an incident at the team's cafeteria, according to team sources.

Martin is listed on the team's injury report with an illness, and is doubtful to play Thursday against the Cincinnati Bengals. Fox NFL insider Jay Glazer reported that Martin was the victim of a prank at the cafeteria, becoming enraged enough to "smash his food tray on the ground."

The second-year pro has not been with the team since that time. Darlington reports that Martin immediately sought treatment at a local hospital. He has since left the hospital and is now spending time with his family, according to team sources.

Martin opened the season as the Dolphins' replacement for Jake Long at left tackle. He was moved to right tackle when the team acquired Bryant McKinnie via trade last week. Tyson Clabo is expected to start in Martin's place on Thursday.

this is a mess because a lot of the players seem to be willing to go to bat for Ritchie regardless of skin color whereas the media and fans want to torch him.

So it sounds like the players know this falls on the Dolphins FO/Coaches, and Ritchie was their scapegoat.

I've only heard Wallace so far.

Fwiw, I don't think its about race.

Everyone has their breaking point. Martin's may be significantly lower than that of the average NFL player. Is he a pussy for it? Yeah, he probably is in the minds of many.

But the reality is, these guys doing the hazing have to recognize where "all in good fun" goes beyond fun. So Martin is a pussy that can't take a joke? Then back the **** off and leave him alone.
Incognito is an asshole and went way over the line. I don't see anyone condoning what he did. I still don't know why a 24 year old 6'5" 320 pound super jock can't stick up for himself, it's lame.

Perfect storm.
You know Martin may just be the brainchild here and realize the potential goldmine he is looking at without even breaking a sweat.

Martin went to an upscale private high school in West Palm Beach, then attended Stanford. I'm certain he's an extremely intelligent individual that just so happens to be a very good football player.

Being a super-athlete doesn't mean he has anger issues or can't control his emotions when confronted, which seems to be the biggest question surrounding these incidents.

He obviously didn't "fight" Incognito because that's not in his nature.

I thought Martin went to some ritzy prep school in LA? But I agree, he probably just isn't that "type" of person to start a fight over whatever was going on.

You're right, my bad. He went to Harvard-Westlake, which costs like $25k per school year (not including donations).

The fact that Martin is smart and well spoken probably didn't help his soft reputation. People expect their football players to be mouth breathing full reeruns like Incognito.

But despite the derogatory and racially charged language in Incognito's voice mail, Dolphins center Mike Pouncey and star wide receiver Mike Wallace both told ESPN's Cris Carter that they want Incognito back on the team.

Carter recounted his conversations with Pouncey and Wallace during an interview Wednesday on "SportsCenter," claiming that both players "respect" and "love" Incognito.

Pouncey, who has been teammates with Incognito for parts of three seasons, and Wallace, in his first year with the Dolphins, told Carter that they do not believe Incognito is a racist.

Pouncey and Wallace also told Carter that they feel comfortable with Incognito as a teammate, saying they feel he is not getting a fair defense in what has become a national controversy.

Conversely, three people who know Martin and have spoken to him told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter that the second-year offensive tackle wants to continue playing football and never told anyone that he wants to leave the sport.
So...?

One of the interesting things is the several Dolphins players that don't seem bothered by Incognito's use of the n-word. They just seem kind of like, "yeah, so."
And I've heard more than one media member sort of indignant that there's no outspoken reaction from them. Like, "Hey, your apathy is taking this story line away from us. Be outraged."

You probably know the most how tough or soft they both are. You should probably go tell the Dolphins players.

miami is a tire fire of an organization... they can't get out of their own way. Look players are going to stick up for teammates...Hell, the chiefs stuck up for Belcher. That doesn't mean that said player (incognito) is not a problem.

No, but let's just assume we all know all the facts and what's best for their organization based on some media reports and opinion pieces.
