2012 Kansas City Royals Repository Thread

2012 Slogan: Our Time

A better, more accurate 2012 Slogan: It is Finally Next Year
(from Great Expectations)

An alternative slogan if you don't like that one: Someone has to win this crappy division
(from alnorth)

With the beginning of a new year, it is time for the 2012 version of the Royals Repository Thread. We've got Hosmer, we've got a 2011-dominating Gordon, we've got Moose, we've got hopefully a killer bullpen, we've got a stereotypical slow slugging DH, we've got easily one of the best defensive shortstops in the AL, we've got a promising catcher in Salvador Perez. Hell, we've got offense and promising prospects galore.

We do not have starting pitching.

Oh yeah, we've also got this:

Get ready for, (as of January 2012 anyway), one of the most confusing puzzles of a baseball season in recent Royals history. Will they suck? Maybe, I don't know. Will we be given a year of 0.500 baseball? Possibly, I don't know. Will they win the division and go to the playoffs for the first time in 27 years? For the first time in a long time, it could happen, I don't know. 92 losses, 92 wins, or anything in between would not surprise a lot of us.

Everything goes here except Gameday threads and really big news. If a giant story breaks, the Royals achieve some awesome milestone, or we sign/lose a highly significant player/coach/mascot/whatever, then it might also deserve its own thread. This being Chiefs Planet, please do not clutter the board with new threads about trivial Royals news or you will only annoy those who come here for just Chiefs football. If you aren't sure and its not a Gameday thread, it goes here.

What sort of stuff often goes here? SPchief explained it well, so I'll just copy that:

Quote:
If you locate something of interest.. ANYTHING.. deals on apparel, best ways in/out of the stadium, giveaways, great stories from this season or from seasons gone by, rumors, trades, anything.... feel free to post it here.

Put this in the draft thread too. Probably don't need it in both places but if some people aren't reading that it's here now too. Pretty neat vid.

He's a great athlete who has a varied arsenal. Great strikeout numbers at USF against good comp. Has a classic pitcher's body.

Royals like his makeup (apparently better than Appel). Fastball runs into the high 90s, has sat at 95-96 through multiple starts. Good movement on the fastball. Curveball is a plus pitch, slider and change are potentially good/average MLB pitches.

BA had Zimmer at the top of its board.

Oh, and here's something you like... 104 K : 17 BB ratio. Also is a 10+ K/9 guy (work was done in 91.2 IP).
Cool. Thanks.

Hosmer glides in the outfield. Knowing the Royals I am surprised they didn't try this already.

I really think Hosmer in the OF really expands upon his abilities. He's not a freak athlete or anything, but he would have no problem in RF. His "amazing" 1B abilities are vastly over exaggerated because he sometimes makes a really nice play. Theres really no reason not to put him in RF unless you already have 3 great OF's.

With a win today and a Detroit loss we pass them in the standings. Would be a good day to have Paulino go out and toss another shutout to put us tied for first in the majors with 7 shutouts.

BTW I saw Paulino at OP mall last Thursday on their day off. I was wearing a Moose shirt so that would have been really sweet if it were him.

Hamilton declines to participate in Derby
Rangers star has not competed since historic performance in '08
By Joey Nowak / MLB.com | 06/06/12 12:38 PM ET

Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton, who is baseball's leading vote-getter for the 2012 All-Star Game in Kansas City after the first ballot update, told reporters Tuesday he will not participate in this year's State Farm Home Run Derby.

Hamilton set a Derby record with 28 homers in the first round of the 2008 contest at Yankee Stadium, but has not participated since. He has already told the Commissioner's Office he will not participate this year at Kauffman Stadium.

"It's just not the right time," Hamilton said. "I haven't done it the past couple of years. I want to be healthy and the best I can be. I don't want to risk anything entertaining the fans. So I respectfully declined again. You just take one swing ... you've got to be smart about it."

Hamilton eventually lost out to Minnesota's Justin Morneau in 2008 despite the historic performance in the first round. The Rangers slugger, who has amassed 2,587,991 All-Star votes as of last count, is on track to start in the American League outfield for the fifth consecutive Midsummer Classic.

Hamilton currently leads the AL with 21 homers.

Robinson Cano, who won last year's contest in Phoenix, has been named the captain for the AL's Derby team. Matt Kemp will head the National League squad.

I tend to agree with this to a certain extent. Though better this year, his footwork on throws can get him into trouble, and he swipes at far too many balls. Needs to demonstrate softer hands.

He's not Billy. Far from it. But he's also not Tex.

i saw an interview with Cano last night where he was talking about picking an Royals player to participate.

Is it too late to get myers in it?
