If the Chiefs go 8-8 or better 49ers get a 2nd round pick.

A third- or second-rounder from Kansas City, the remnant of the Alex Smith deal. Now it can be told: The second draft choice San Francisco will receive from the Smith deal will be K.C.'s second-rounder in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 or better this season. It will be a third-rounder in 2014 if Kansas City is under .500 this season.

So: San Francisco will probably have first-, second- and four third-rounders next year. But if the Chiefs surprise, it'll more likely be a one, two twos and three threes. As we've seen, GM Trent Baalke is dangerous with extra picks in his hands. If Colin Kaepernick is very good, the Niners should be annual contenders for years with the picks laid out that way.

We had a need and filled it.

It's called the quarterback position.

And Smith was as good as it was going to get for the 2013 season in terms of the Chiefs getting a guy who could contribute at a high level immediately.

I'll take that over a second round rookie project.

You're doing well. I would swear you were straight from the Chiefs PR deparment. The only give away is so far you haven't told anyone to "Get a clue; your choice to be a fan".

Well, I have just been informed by a nice Moderator (I didn't know you had any of those. Moderators I mean, not be they to nice or bad... ) that a certain Chiefs Planet member is NOT posting here under multiple usernames.

I stand corrected and the matter shall be dropped forthwith.

I understand that an apology addressed to the entire forum membership is in order. So, here goes...

Men!

I can assure you that I had no intention of being either harsh or cruel in my treatment of the... Chiefsplanet member in question. My sole purpose was to try to restore in him some sense of appreciation of his obligations as a Chiefs fan and member of this forum. "If one could shame an Alexsexual," I felt, "one might help him to regain his self-respect." This was on my mind. Now, I freely admit that my method was wrong, but I hope you can understand my motive. And that you will accept this explanation... and this... apology.

Now I'm outta here like shit through a goose.

The draft didn't go as I wanted, but I'm not going to piss and moan about it at this point.

And the truth is, I think Alex Smith is a good quarterback who has been in a bad situation for a long time. However, he's remained resilient and positive, when a lot of guys would have pulled a Jake Plummer and told everyone to go to hell. I also think he'll mesh exceptionally well with Andy Reid, Jamaal Charles and Dwayne Bowe. He's athletic, smart, accurate and doesn't put the ball into the defenses hands. He's a game manager, but for this system, that's not a bad thing. Ball/time control and owning the right side of the field should be what this offense gives you with Smith.

I think that the Chiefs have a very good core group of players on both sides of the ball and brought in guys who will immediately help.

I think that there is reason for optimism for this team in 2013. This was a team in 2012 that many pundits were claiming as their playoff dark horse due to the talent on the roster and with six Pro Bowl players after a 2-14 season, there is talent on this roster. And they've made this team better. DeVito should be better than Dorsey. Sean Smith is better than Routt. And Alex Smith is markedly better than Cassel. The offensive line and linebacking unit should absolutely destroy people.

I fully believe that this team will be competitive at a high level right out of the gate if Reid is able to get everyone on the same page.

This team, IMO, has potential.

DeVito is Dorsey. They're the same. The entire DL is underwhelming. DJ is very good, whoever ends up as the SILB is a complete unknown. Hali and Houston are fine, but you know who had more pressures with fewer rushing snaps than either? Old, broken, out-of-position Dwight Freeney.

The OL looks impressive, but Bowe and Charles are the only talented skill players on offense. Offensively, the Chiefs will not be much better than last season.

I'd guess 6 wins.

This is spot on.

And we have a potentially awful secondary. Huge question mark with two big time red flags.

When Alex Smith is our QB...you can't afford to be a bottom half pass D.

I have tried to get this threw peoples heads. Being an Alex Smith ball washer and all. He has no ego, he has no problem checking off to a run, if it means that its a better option. Its one of my favorite traits about him, that and he defers all the credit where it rightfully belongs, to his teammates.

Alice ball washers?
Irony. Are you talking to yourself here? He is after all, YOUR qb. he is the guy you will be pulling for, unless you are sadistic like some fans i knew on the niners board, that were actively wishing for him to get hurt, or to play bad,,,,,

This ain't rocket science. I was never a fan of Cleveland or KC as teams. I was a fan of Schottenheimer's and liked to watch his teams play and rooted for them to win.

Massive difference from being a freaking Browns fan.

It is not brain surgery figuring that one out.
So, when Kaep leaves the niners you will stop being a fan of them too? Im confused.

I heard about that. Lol, heard about how he actually got people to sign up and they have like signatures or some stuff, and that hes NUMBER ONE hahahahahaha. Wonder who got 7?

In 13 games last season, the offense put 52 points on the board in the 1st half of games. 4 points a game average. That was damn near unwatchable.

One could point fingers anywhere and make a case as to why that was so, but IMO bottom line was that it came back to Pioli forcing Cassel on the team. Outside of Winston, I just don't think the team bought into Cassel being the guy. Hali said as much when Orton was QB. RAC did as well.

Sac has made some great posts the last couple of weeks as why there should/could be reason for optimism this coming season.

While the team may not be perfect at every position, it is clear the new regime is making legit moves to make this a very competitive team as quickly as possible.
