Adam Teicher calls out Sippio Nation

REGULATORS, MOUNT UP

http://chiefsblog.kansascity.com/?q=node/119

Quote:
The myth of Bobby Sippio

One of the many negative aspects of last summer's visit to Chiefs camp of NFL Films and the Hard Knocks crew was that the show glorified a wide receiver of rather average talents by the name of Bobby Sippio.

I still receive regular e-mails from fans wondering why the Chiefs don't play Sippio more and why I don't write about him more. I get more questions about Sippio than about any other Chiefs player, a fact that is simply amazing considering that Dwayne Bowe, Larry Johnson, Brodie Croyle and dozens of other more interesting subjects play for this team.

So it was predictable that the hate mail would roll in today after I had the nerve to write a story in this morning's Kansas City Star detailing the contributions of some of the Chiefs' young receivers in the exhibition opener in Chicago. I wrote mainly about Maurice Price, Will Franklin and Jeff Webb.

Not a mention of Sippio. I even received a call yesterday afternoon from one of my editors wondering whether I had simply forgotten about Sippio and that he caught the winning TD. I'll pass along what I told him.

Price, Franklin and Webb did their work against Chicago starters or backups who will be with the Bears when the regular season begins. These three receivers also look like they will be playing for the Chiefs when the season starts.

Sippio did his work in the fourth quarter of a preseason game. That's the domain of guys who will be looking for jobs in another few weeks. It's a sign, Sippio fans, that your hero is going to have a tough time making the team. And he caught his three passes against players who will soon be ex-Bears.

That may not mean much to you, but I guarantee that it does to the Chiefs.

I talk regularly with Herm Edwards, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey and wide receivers coach Eric Price. None has been critical of Sippio, even off the record. But clearly they are more excited about Franklin and Price, mainly because of their speed.

Sippio isn't fast. It's why he was playing in the Arena League when he joined the Chiefs. It's why he doesn't get more playing opportunities.

I can't tell you today whether or not Sippio will make the team. My guess is that he won't. But one thing is becoming clear: the wide receivers who will play for the Chiefs when the season begins will come from this group: Bowe, Devard Darling, Franklin, Price and Webb. Not Bobby Sippio.

And that's something the billions of Bobby Sippio fans out there will just have to deal with.
News From The Future: Kansas City Star writer Adam Teicher was killed today when his brakes failed, causing his car to careen off a 50-foot cliff. Teicher actually survived the crash and exited the car, only to be hit by a meteor that had fallen from outer space. "It was almost as if he had tempted fate somehow," remarked an officer at the scene.

I'm rooting for Sippio to do well, just like every other Chief. I hope he succeeds, of course.

But the internet hype around him is just... beyond silly. (And you can't blame the media for this one.)

I honestly thought most of the hard core Sippio guys were just kidding. I didn't ever consider that they might actually think he was that good.

I think at the very best, he could be a reliable posession receiver. Maybe run a a slant for a 7 yard catch on third and five.... that kind thing. If he could I'd be very happy for him.

i think at the very best he could be someone like brandon stokely. a guy who would get looks in certain situations but won't ever be more than a situational threat because he lacks the physical tools to beat people.

Let me give you guys some news flash...I was one of those Sippio lovers..and I hope he can prove me, Teicher and other people who doubt Sippio.

But when I watched the Chiefs in OTA's..Sippio couldn't catch some passes when the WR's were doing their catch drills. If anyone was at the public OTA at Arrowhead, you might remember that Sippio dropped a pass that went right to his hands.

I hate to say it because I'm one of those people that hope Sippio can make it, but I don't see it happening. Everyone is saying that he hasn't caught a pass because he hasn't had the chance to play, well there is why. I admit that I fell for the HBO tricks.

I don't think anyone dislikes Sippio...

It's just that he got this rabid fanbase that came out of nowhere...

I really, honestly want to see the guy kick ass. I just think it's a bit odd that he's got such a following.

My WR crush is for Will Franklin. He's a Mizzou guy, and now a Chief. I'll root for him no matter what. It may, or may not be misguided, but at least I can give you a reason.

Eggzactly.

If the Patriots signed Sippio, their fans wouldn't even notice.

Same goes for the Giants, Cowboys, Jaguars, Colts, Chargers and Redskins.

The depleted wide receiver corp of the 2007 Chiefs? Hell yeah! AFL stud? Bring him on!

No disrespect to Sippio and his family but I hope the Chiefs have six guys better than him.

You tend to get excited about a tough receiver who will go over the middle and make the tough catch.

I understand he's too slow to play in the NFL. But geez, this article is ****ing dumb. Leave the bashing to Whitlock. Teicher's job is to report facts clearly and on time, which he already does poorly. I'm willing to bet Clayton could do a better job.

In any case, now I hope Bobby Sippio makes the team just to rub his shit all over Teicher's mouth and say "you like that."

If I had a dollar for evry time a member of the KC media insulted Chiefs fans....

Personally, I don't have any attachment to Sippio. I want the Chiefs to field the best receivers they can, and if Sippio isn't one of them it's no loss to me. The fact that he was playing the final qtr of the first pre-season game tells me all I need to know in regards to how the coaches rank him. That being said, he made the most of the opportunity he was given. Maybe next game he'll get more looks because of it. He's certainly been more impressive than a lot of WRs that have been in similar pre-season situations for the Chiefs over the last few years.

My only vested interest in Sippio at this point is related to making another condescending member of the KC media eat is smug words.

But if it doesn't work out, he can always join Rich Scanlon, Jesse Haynes, and Casey Printers in creating a new football league that will become the greatest accomplishment in the history of mankind.

never have liked teicher

if fans don't get excited, then they are band wagon, whine and cheese, spoiled, not true fans .....

if they DO get excited then they get trashed just the same

Teicher is the same member of the media that runs scared everytime the Chiefs blink and never reports real issues until AFTER the problem is gone/solved/removed because he's too much of a coward to actually stand up for anything.

Hell ... i still remember Teicher calling out the fans on the radio because they didn't support the company line that Donnell Bennett was a starting NFL caliber running back.

Lets see, Sippio blocks well catches the ball well and can score TDs in the red zone. WTF. Not only that he is a bonus to keep D Bowe in check. I think Sippio is good for D Bowe and good for this team. Gives us somebody to root for and cheer when he catches the ball. Another big WR for a weapon and beat up the enimy. Will Franklin can streatch the football field get us in the Red Zone and Croyle would have three big targets, even four big targets, Tony Gonzalez, D Bowe, SIPPIO & Cottom.

Realistically, Sippio's experience in special teams might give him an edge. He's going to have to prove something extra these next couple weeks though if he wants that 5th spot... like work hard enough in practice to NOT play with the scrubs in the 4th quarter
