Doctor Who

Been meaning to start a thread on this for years and never have for some reason. Big fan of both the original (what I've seen/remember of it...) and the rebooted series.

Doctor Who: The Power Of Three promo pics

ittingly, the BBC has released three pictures teasing the next Doctor Who episode but one, The Power Of Three...

Apologies for getting a little ahead of ourselves. This Saturday's episode of Doctor Who will be the gunslinging Western-themed A Town Called Mercy (our spoiler-free review here), but as the Beeb has seen fit to release a few promo pics for episode four, The Power Of Three, we thought we'd share them.

The episode is another from the keyboard of Chris Chibnall, following on from his family fun instalment, Dinosaurs On A Spaceship. The Sontaran Strategem and The Poison Sky director Douglas Mackinnon is at the helm, with guest appearances from Gemma Redgrave, Mark Williams, Steven Berkoff, Selva Rasalingam, and Alice O'Connell.

Before you take a look at the pictures, more of which are on their way early next week, here's an introduction to the episode from Steven Moffat, courtesy of the Radio Times:

"The day the Earth got cubed. The year of the slow invasion. The time the Doctor came to stay."

There have been many ways to invade the Earth, and the Doctor has seen them all. Or so he always thought - and then the human race wakes up one morning and discovers the world has been overrun by... small black cubes. Which then proceed to... do nothing much at all. A plan is afoot, humanity is endangered - but by what and how and, above all, when? For the first time in his world-saving career the Doctor has to call upon the least of his virtues: patience. And the Ponds face something possibly more terrifying than any world-ending apocalypse - the Doctor is moving in!

Not just a tale of alien intervention, this is also the story of a nice young couple who happen to have a bow-tied lunatic from space staying in their spare room. It's halfway between an alien invasion movie and The Man Who Came to Dinner.

Pics at the link.

Doctor Who: The Power Of Three spoiler-free review
Review Simon Brew Sep 17, 2012

Doctor Who series 7 episode 4: here’s our spoiler-free look at the penultimate Doctor Who before it takes a bit of a break…

7.4 The Power Of Three

Well, this is a very, very pleasant surprise. When the first five episodes of Doctor Who series 7 were finally confirmed, The Power Of Three was the one that, perhaps, flew under people’s radar the most. After all, there were Daleks, dinosaurs, Angels of the weeping variety and a western hogging the limelight. But overlook The Power Of Three at your peril: it’s a really, really good episode of Doctor Who.

In tone and feel, it’s got the sprightly buzz of a Russell T Davies-era episode, one set towards the back end of one of his series. It feels like it’s building to something throughout, but there’s a real zip to make the adventure itself work.

It’s perhaps less of the standalone movie-style story that we’ve had this series so far, and once upon a time you can’t help but wonder if this may have been a two parter in days of old. But as a single 45 minute blast of fun, it’s one of the highlights of the series, albeit one that has to gallop to its ending a little too quickly as a result of its running time. One element of The Power Of Three’s narrative is built up, and there feels like there’s not sufficient time to finish it off.

Still, The Power Of Three deserves to be cut slack for that, given just how well the rest of it all comes together.

More accessible, arguably, than some Who episodes of late, The Power Of Three does a couple of things really well. Firstly, and perhaps best of all, it allows us to spend some quality time with the Doctor, Amy and Rory together, at one stage all under one roof. On the surface, it’s funny to see, and it’s a reminder that we rarely get the three of them having a spare moment for a chat. But there’s also a deepening going on here. Amy and Rory have lives away from the Doctor, and The Power Of Three does dig into that a little.

Then there’s the science fiction bit, involving a lot of cubes. You’ve probably seen the cubes in the trailer and in pictures thus far, but we’re still going to stay on the safe side of spoiler-free and let you discover them for yourself. Just to say that they’re a good idea, very well used.

We get a return for Mark Williams as Rory’s dad here as well, and he cements his place as our new hero. Seemingly effortlessly funny, he’s excellent again in The Power Of Three, in an episode where his role is far more than comic relief.

To heighten the stakes, the toolkit of old is effectively employed. BBC newsreaders doing talking heads, a genuine sense of a global problem, lots of concerned faces, that sort of thing. There are a few surprises too, and writer Chris Chibnall (who also penned Dinosaurs On A Spaceship in this series run) weaves in some moments for long-time fans of the show. It’s a really satisfying all-round episode, in spite of its few problems.

The Power Of Three feels, for the most part, like a much lighter episode of Who, and on the whole, that’s what it is. It’s extremely good fun, funny, and has at its core a central idea that’s used really very well. Vintage Who? Maybe not, but even if The Power Of Three isn’t the best run of the series to date, it might just be the most enjoyable. A real treat. The teaser for the week after isn't bad, either...

I really liked the last episode, especially the part where Amy had to remind the Doctor that he was not acting the part. This new doctor is probably the most curious of all the doctors and yet the least patient. He has a dark streak that that even Eccleston couldn't match despite the fact he is a friendly and caring person. I did think it was a bit out of character for Rory. Its clear that its time for those two to settle down to their lives.

Doctor Who: lots and lots of The Angels Take Manhattan pics

bumper crop of spoiler-y new images has arrived early from the The Angels Take Manhattan...

Warning: spoilers lie within...

Written by Steven Moffat, The Angels Take Manhattan is the last in the current chunk of episodes before the Christmas Special, and as we know, it’s the episode in which the Doctor bids adieu to two people very dear to him.

We’ll let Moffat explain, courtesy of the Radio Times:

"Never let him see the damage. And never, ever let him see you age. He doesn't like endings."

he Doctor has been dropping in on the Ponds for some years now, and he's barely even noticed that his little Amelia Pond is now wearing reading glasses.

Surely nothing has to change now? Surely this can go on for ever? Has the wandering Time Lord at last found a family and the nearest thing to a home he could imagine?

But out there in New York the Weeping Angels are waiting for them all, and a very different destiny is falling into place. Not even River Song can save them from the terrible events to come.

Heartbreak is always a terrible thing. But imagine if you had two of them...

A huge pile of images (we’re very nearly talking the episode in flipbook form) for The Angels Take Manhattan has arrived online, so if you don’t want to go in cold, take a look at the link.

Doctor Who: Peter Jackson wants to direct an episode

The Kiwi filmmaker is a huge Doctor Who fan, thinks Matt Smith is fantastic, and would jump at the chance to direct an episode…

This may not qualify as news per se, but the notion tickled us enough to pass on. Peter Jackson, the man currently busy turning Tolkien’s The Hobbit into a film trilogy, has come out as a “…huge Doctor Who fan”, and when asked if he’d consider directing an episode answered “Just name a time and place, and I’ll be there!”

Jackson was speaking to the New Zealand-based Waikato Times, who’d just finished chatting to Matt Smith about how much he’d like to shoot an episode of Who in New Zealand, preferably under Jackson’s watchful eye.

No plans are afoot as yet to bring The Lord Of The Rings director on board with Who, but it’s fun to imagine nevertheless what such a collaboration may look like. Would it be just the one episode, for instance, two, or perhaps a three-parter?

That would probably be the biggest coup for the Doctor since Douglass Addams was the script writer.

Not one, not two, not three, but four trailers are here for this Saturday’s episode of Doctor Who: The Angels Take Manhattan…

These trailers contain potential spoilers for The Angels Take Manhattan

It’s safe to say that there’s not a small amount of anticipation leading up to Saturday’s episode of Doctor Who, the last in the current series chunk, so much so that not one but four trailers for the episode have appeared online.

The first two are from the Beeb, and you’ll have seen the first as the ‘Next Week…’ tease after The Power Of Three. The third hails from Auntie’s US cousin, BBC America, while the last, most spoiler-y one comes from Space. Yes, that’s what we said. Space.

Watch each one in turn and you’ve about two good minutes of episode there, or you could play them all at once like an avant garde Doctor Who video installation, though we wouldn’t necessarily recommend it.

I'm a bit underwhelmed by the last episode. A lot of nothing. Too easy a fix as well.

Doctor Who: The Angels Take Manhattan spoiler-free review
Review Simon Brew Sep 26, 2012
Share on printShare on emailShare on stumbleuponShare on twitterShare on facebook

Doctor Who signs off until Christmas with The Angels Take Manhattan. Here's our spoiler-free review...

7.5 The Angels Take Manhattan

Appreciating that most of you know what's going to happen in this episode, given that it's a little secret Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are leaving Doctor Who, we're still going to be extra-cautious not to give anything away in this review. As such, plot discussion will be minimal.

What we can say is what's given away in the title. The Angels Take Manhattan sees the return of the Weeping Angels. It also sees the aforementioned departure of Amy and Rory. And while it's not a perfect episode, it does have a real emotional wallop to it. Steven Moffat, who is on writing duties here, takes real time to give two of his characters a good send-off, and there will be little doubt come the end credits that he's managed to do just that.

Furthermore, the style, look and feel of the episode is exquisite. This week's blockbuster theme is a good, detective film noir, and director Nick Hurran - along with the production designers - are clearly having a ball with it (as is Moffat with the script). The episode at its best looks amazing, and the New York location shoot is well used as well. Credit where credit's due: each week, Doctor Who has really tried to give us a distinctive looking standalone blockbuster, and The Angels Take Manhattan - whilst not quite as noisy as some of the others - looks glorious.

Let's get the grumbles out of the way. The Angels themselves, if anything, are the weak bit here. Inevitably, given that this is their third full story in Doctor Who, their scare factor has diluted the more they're exposed. Steven Moffat once again finds ways to evolve them and deepen them, but The Angels Take Manhattan does lack the sinister edge and the get-under-your-skin fright of the Angels of past. That's a by-product of us getting more familiar with them, but also there's something to do with the Angels near the start of the episode that doesn't quite work.

Also, the episode zips around an awful lot, and it requires some attention to follow the assorted threads. We've no problem with that - television that demands something of its audience is no bad thing - yet it's the stiller moments that are the most effective here. As much fun as Steven Moffat tries to pack into the episode, it's in the final third where it's very much at its strongest.

We're not going to say much more, because you really don't want this episode spoiled. So we'll come to the crux of it: did we love The Angels Take Manhattan? No, although we'd bet that many of you will. But it's nonetheless a good episode, that's excellent when its focus more overtly shifts to what we know is coming.

The ending in particular is strong, as much for the Doctor as for anything else. And Matt Smith is brilliant once more. It'd be remiss to say he gives one of his best performances in the role, because his central work in the show, particularly over what's been a bumpy-ish five episodes, has been uniformly tremendous. Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill are no slouches either, and The Angels Take Manhattan is a real reminder of the strength they've brought to Doctor Who over the best few years.

Our advice for Saturday night? Lower your expectations just a little, get some tissues ready, and prepare for a good, moving episode of Doctor Who. It's just a shame we won't get any more until Christmas...

I liked the Power of Three. It was nice to see one character driven episode after the other three we've had this season. But I have no complaints. So far this has been the most enjoyable Matt Smith season for me.

I prefer the RTD run on Doctor Who with David Tennant, and this latest episode reminded me a lot of those.

TATM shows the Doctor (Matt Smith), Amy (Karen Gillan), Rory (Arthur Darvill) and Melody/River (Alex Kingston) a very, very bad day. The kind of day only a very twisted and dark-spirited soul could conjure. Steven Moffat wrote this, and I'm thinking The Moff may need a hug. Everyone extend a cyber hug to The Moff via the Docbacks below. But, you know, keep it clean.

Yet within Angels’ aggressive determination to shove its characters all the way through an emotional shredder, and then kick around the piece of what’s left, there is still beauty...and no small portion of hope. Longstanding WHO tenets about love and dedication are pointedly re-validated here, and the relationship between a few of the show’s regular characters are more clearly stated and sharply defined than ever before. More than being about time displacement or creepy alien 'don't blink' statue things, Angels in Manhattan is about love, commitment, and what they ultimately mean when all chips are down.

Last week’s generally excellent The Power of Three began an emotional arc seen to fruition in Angels. While Power and Angels are more or less detached narratively, I very much feel the two work in concert together in a number of regards. As I wrote LAST WEEK, I view Power of Three as something of a pre-emptive wake for Amy and Rory’s highly publicized departure from DOCTOR WHO. And, of course, it very much cemented an emotional undercurrent/backbone for what happens this weekend.

Lot more after the link.
